Jordan Goodwin seizes his Lakers opportunity in the 2024-25 season, showcasing hustle and defensive prowess off the bench.

The Los Angeles Lakers have found unexpected value in Jordan Goodwin during the 2024-25 season, as the team works within new Collective Bargaining Agreement restrictions that limit spending on luxury tax. Goodwin, initially part of the Lakers’ G League team, earned a two-way contract and quickly impressed head coach JJ Redick, who integrated him as a tough perimeter defender off the bench.

Goodwin’s strong performances in limited minutes led the Lakers to upgrade him to a standard NBA contract, ensuring his place on the roster moving forward. Redick expressed confidence in Goodwin’s abilities, signaling the possibility of a larger role for the guard in the upcoming season.

Goodwin Reflects on Progress and Preparation for Next Season

Despite a promising start to his professional career, Goodwin is already focused on improvement. Reviewing his rookie season, he stated,

“Me personally, just try to double down and get ready for next year. Had a decent year, personally. So I can’t complain. But just get ready for next year,”

during his exit interview.

Looking ahead to the offseason, Goodwin plans to develop multiple facets of his game, including conditioning. “Pretty much everything,” he said, followed by,

“Playmaking, shooting, get in better shape and things like that. That’s what it will take to make a big leap for next year.”

He also acknowledged his early setbacks with injury but maintains a determined mindset to earn his spot on the team.

“Very grateful. I was hurt earlier so God gave me a chance to come back and get back on this stage. I’m just gonna try my best to stay here,”

Goodwin shared.

JJ Redick Highlights Goodwin’s Influence Beyond Scoring

Coach JJ Redick has praised Jordan Goodwin for his value that extends past traditional statistics. While Goodwin may not put up large scoring numbers, Redick considers him an important contributor who brings energy and defensive prowess to the Lakers’ lineup. This understanding reflects the team’s approach to building a roster with role players that complement stars like LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves.

Goodwin’s Role Within a Star-Heavy Lakers Squad

While Goodwin might not evolve into a primary starter on a championship-contending team, his traits position him well as a dependable role player. The Lakers rely on their trio of stars for offense, leaving opportunities for players like Goodwin to earn minutes by focusing on defense, hustle, and versatility. His proven defensive instincts and dedication could help him carve out an increased presence in the rotation next season.

With the Lakers constrained by CBA rules on roster construction, maximizing talent from players like Jordan Goodwin is essential. His journey from G League to a guaranteed roster spot demonstrates the value of investing in developing players who contribute in key non-scoring roles. As Goodwin prepares to elevate his game in the offseason, the Lakers appear poised to benefit from his continued growth and commitment in their future campaigns.
