Eric Gray struggles to secure the Giants running back role amidst disappointing performances and the arrival of competition.

Following the loss of star running back Saquon Barkley to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency ahead of the 2024 NFL season, the New York Giants have been searching for a reliable option at the running back position. Eric Gray, a former fifth-round draft pick from Tennessee and Oklahoma, remained on the roster but faced pressure to step up.

Eric Gray’s Performance Falls Short in Second Year

Gray’s rookie season in 2023 was largely uneventful, as he served as a backup to Barkley, rushing for just 48 yards on 17 carries and missing time due to injury. He was also occasionally utilized on kickoff and punt returns. Expectations that Gray would take on a larger role in 2024 diminished after his performance declined, rushing for only 31 yards on 14 carries and averaging 2.2 yards per carry. Ball security issues during return duties led to his removal from special teams play, reflecting his ongoing struggles to claim the lead role.

Giants Draft Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo in Fourth Round

The Giants’ offense continued to struggle through a disappointing 3-14 season, prompting the team to look elsewhere for running back talent. In April, New York added Cam Skattebo from Arizona State with a fourth-round pick, signaling a fresh direction and casting doubt on Gray’s future with the team. Although Gray remains under contract through 2026, his rookie deal carries minimal cap consequences if released, with notable savings expected.
