Marlins Place Derek Hill on 10-Day Injured List; Victor Mesa Jr. Recalled Amid Outfield Injuries

The Miami Marlins placed outfielder Derek Hill on the 10-day injured list on Monday after he suffered a sprained left wrist. This move comes shortly after Hill made a key defensive play on Sunday, executing a diving catch to prevent a hit by Angels’ Nolan Schanuel during the Marlins’ 3-0 victory on the road.

Victor Mesa Jr. Joins Marlins Roster

To fill the roster gap, Miami recalled outfielder Victor Mesa Jr. from their Triple-A affiliate in Jacksonville. At 23 years old, Mesa is a highly regarded prospect within the Marlins organization and is expected to make his major league debut soon. He has been performing well in the minors, batting .300 with two doubles, one triple, one home run, and five RBIs over six games this season.

Player Backgrounds and Team Impact

Hill, 29, has struggled with wrist issues this season, having previously spent time on the injured list for a similar left wrist problem from mid-April to mid-May. He is currently batting .233 with two home runs, five RBIs, a .300 on-base percentage, and a .670 OPS. Additionally, Hill has successfully stolen six bases in six attempts during 23 games this year. His major league career has spanned five teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants, and Miami Marlins.

The Marlins are also managing other outfield injuries, as Dane Myers is sidelined with a right oblique strain, and Griffin Conine recently underwent left shoulder surgery with an anticipated return in 2026. These absences have increased the importance of Mesa’s arrival to help stabilize the outfield.

Outlook for Miami Marlins’ Outfield

The Marlins’ decision to place Derek Hill on the injured list and bring up Victor Mesa Jr. reflects their need to address multiple injuries in the outfield. Mesa’s promotion offers fresh energy and potential at-bat and defensive positions while Hill recovers. The team’s performance will likely depend on how quickly injured players return and how effectively Mesa adapts to the major league level during this critical period.
