Kumar Rocker is being considered as the Texas Rangers’ closer as they seek to revitalize their struggling bullpen.

The Texas Rangers, currently positioned fourth in the AL West, are exploring ways to strengthen their pitching staff this season. With their bullpen struggling to make an impact, the team is considering using Kumar Rocker as their closer once he returns from the injured list, aiming to add a spark in late-game situations.

Kumar Rocker’s Injury and Rehab Progress

Rocker has been sidelined since late April due to a shoulder impingement but has recently begun a rehab assignment in the minor leagues. The organization’s interest in transitioning Rocker to the closer role aligns with his fastball-slider combination, which they believe suits the demands of late-inning relief appearances more than his recent starting role.

Performance Challenges in Starting Role

Rocker began the season in the Rangers’ rotation but encountered significant struggles against hitters. Over five starts and 20 innings, opponents hit .341/.379/.534 against him, resulting in a high 8.10 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. His OPS allowed stood at .913, and batters performed even better when facing him for the first time in games, posting a .372/.400/.605 slash line.

Current Bullpen Situation and Strategic Considerations

The Rangers’ bullpen has posted a 4.20 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP, ranking in the middle of the MLB, but the closer role has proved problematic. Luke Jackson has recorded an ERA above 5.00 and a WHIP of 1.60, with eight saves in ten opportunities, indicating inconsistency in closing games. Using Rocker as a reliever would also enable the Rangers to activate him more quickly since he would not require the same extended pitch count buildup needed for a starting role.

Looking Ahead: Potential Impact of Rocker’s Return

Texas remains optimistic that Rocker’s skill set will translate well in shorter relief outings, improving bullpen stability. If successful, this move could provide the Rangers with a reliable late-inning option and help improve their standing in the highly competitive AL West as the season progresses.
