Orlando Arcia Nears Deal with Colorado Rockies as Team Looks to Rebound from Historic Slump

Orlando Arcia is nearing a contract agreement with the Colorado Rockies, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The former Atlanta Braves shortstop was designated for assignment by the Braves on Sunday after a sluggish start to the season, where he recorded only six hits in 31 at-bats. This move comes as the Rockies seek to strengthen their roster amid a challenging season.

Arcia’s Career and Role in Colorado’s Infield

The 30-year-old, who has played 843 of his 920 major league games at shortstop, is expected to serve as a backup to Rockies’ starter Ezequiel Tovar, who recently signed a seven-year, $63.5 million contract. Arcia has posted a career slash line of .241/.294/.373 with 87 home runs and 335 RBIs over ten seasons. His standout year was in 2023 when he earned an All-Star selection. With the Braves, Arcia appeared in 16 post-season games, batting .182 with a home run and two RBIs since being traded from the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021.

Rockies Struggle as They Attempt to Turn Season Around

The Rockies are currently last in Major League Baseball with a record of 9-45 and have set a modern-era record for the worst start through 50 games. Adding Arcia is part of their effort to improve their infield depth and overall performance as they attempt to move past an unprecedented slump this season.
