Logan Gilbert’s First Rehab Start: Promising Velocity but Struggles Highlight Road Back to Mariners

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert took an important step Thursday night as he begins his return from the injured list. His first rehab start with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers revealed encouraging signs in velocity, but also underscored challenges he must overcome to regain his form.

Details of Logan Gilbert’s Initial Rehab Appearance

Gilbert was sidelined in late April due to a flexor strain in his pitching arm. In his first rehab outing, he was expected to pitch three innings for Tacoma but managed only 1 2/3 innings, throwing 45 pitches overall. During that span, Gilbert struck out three batters, gave up one run on two hits, and allowed two walks. The opposing Salt Lake City Bees made him throw 28 pitches in the first inning alone, with just 24 of the 45 throws registering as strikes.

Despite those struggles, Gilbert’s fastball velocity remained in line with his pre-injury averages. He consistently reached speeds between 95 and 96 mph, peaking at 96.8 mph during the first inning. Before landing on the injured list, Gilbert’s fastball was averaging around 95.5 mph. This indicates his arm strength is still intact, though command and stamina need work.

Outlook and Mariners’ Pitching Staff Status

The Mariners have not announced how many rehab appearances Gilbert will require before rejoining the major league roster. General manager Justin Hollander indicated that Thursday’s outing was only the first step of a longer process.

“Sort of how much volume he needs to build in the minor leagues will be to be determined based on how he feels and … how it goes,”

Hollander said.

This is the first time Gilbert, a 28-year-old right-hander, has missed playing time since his MLB debut in May 2021. It is also just his second time pitching at the Triple-A level, as he began the 2021 season in Tacoma but was promoted after one start.

Once Gilbert returns to the majors, the Mariners’ rotation could be at full strength for the first time this season. George Kirby, who missed the start of the year due to right shoulder inflammation, made his season debut on May 22. Meanwhile, Bryce Miller, sidelined earlier this month with right elbow inflammation, is scheduled to come back Saturday against Minnesota.

Renewed Strength for Seattle Mariners’ Starting Rotation

With Gilbert, Kirby, and Miller all healthy or nearing return, Seattle’s pitcher staff looks set to stabilize following a difficult stretch. The timing could be crucial as the Mariners aim to maintain their position near the top of the AL West division. A fully stocked rotation will provide more consistency and depth for the remainder of the season.

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander’s cautious but optimistic approach suggests the team is committed to ensuring Gilbert returns fully ready rather than rushing his comeback. His first rehab start showed promising velocity but also highlighted the volume and control aspects Gilbert must improve before stepping back onto the major league mound.
