Russell Wilson Defends George Pickens: Talent Unmatched, Just Misunderstood on and off the Field
Russell Wilson praises George Pickens' talent and defends him against criticism of his attitude and outbursts.

Russell Wilson, formerly the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, has expressed strong admiration for former Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, despite having only played one season together. After Wilson signed with the New York Giants and Pickens was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, the two will now face each other twice per season in the NFC East. Their brief time as teammates, however, left a significant impression on Wilson regarding Pickens’ personality and exceptional abilities.

Wilson Addresses Criticism of Pickens’ Attitude

During an appearance on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast hosted by NBA Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, Wilson spoke openly in defense of Pickens. He acknowledged the criticism Pickens has faced for occasional outbursts and attitude, emphasizing the young receiver’s true nature and potential.

Man, I love George. His ability to catch the football is one of a kind. Anything in his vicinity, he’s [going] catch it. Hopefully he doesn’t catch none of them against us,

Wilson said, highlighting Pickens’ undeniable talent, according to a video shared from the show’s YouTube page. He added,

On a serious note, he’s misunderstood. He wants to be great, you know? I think, also, too, his ability, where he can take it from not just being great, to being one the world’s best, I think he has that in him.

Wilson also noted his loyalty to former teammates, stating,

I’m always rooting for guys I’ve played with, just not when we play ’em.

Pickens’ Growth and Impact with Wilson Under Center

The pair shared a productive relationship throughout the 2024 season in Pittsburgh. Pickens, in turn, praised Wilson for his leadership during an appearance on The Adam Schefter Podcast, expressing gratitude for the influence Wilson provided. Their connection on the field became evident starting in Week 7 against the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football, when Pickens began to thrive receiving passes from Wilson.

After Week 7, Pickens caught 33 of his 59 passes from Wilson, totaling 537 yards and all three of his touchdowns. In their first game together with Wilson as quarterback, Pickens recorded 111 yards and a touchdown on five receptions versus the Jets, signaling a promising partnership. Despite missing three games late in the year due to a hamstring injury that impacted Pittsburgh’s passing game, the duo showed flashes of success in their final game together. In the Steelers’ AFC Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Wilson found Pickens five times for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Challenges with Maturity and Discipline Affecting Pickens’ Career

Despite his clear on-field talent, Pickens struggled with discipline and composure during his time with the Steelers. He was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct following big plays against Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13, lost his temper during his return from injury on Christmas Day against the Kansas City Chiefs, and clashed with fans after multiple problematic drops in the regular-season finale at Acrisure Stadium. These incidents contributed to Pittsburgh’s decision to trade him to Dallas.

Wilson sees Pickens as a player with immense potential who still needs to master the maturity side of the game. He believes Pickens wants to be great but currently lacks the ability to consistently control his emotions and play with the right balance. Although Pittsburgh, led by respected head coach Mike Tomlin, could not fully harness Pickens’ maturity, Wilson remains hopeful the move to Dallas will provide new opportunities for growth.

Outlook for Pickens in Dallas and Future Developments

Wilson is optimistic that Pickens can realize his potential with the Cowboys if he can develop better self-control and find the right way to channel his competitive edge. The trade represents a fresh start for Pickens, who must demonstrate he can combine his exceptional talent with discipline to avoid hindering his team. Wilson’s insights carry weight given his firsthand experience coaching Pickens on the field and understanding his challenges.

Their ongoing NFC East rivalry will offer continued opportunities to observe how both players evolve in their new roles this season. As Wilson and Pickens face one another twice annually, the former teammates’ contrasting fortunes will be a compelling storyline to watch.
