SANTA CLARA — After being selected as the No. 262 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, quarterback Brock Purdy has surpassed expectations throughout his first three NFL seasons. Recently, Purdy signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, raising public and team expectations. Despite the considerable financial commitment, Purdy insists his confident mindset remains consistent as he prepares for the 2025 season.
He acknowledges that the organization places significant trust in his abilities but emphasizes that pressure to perform has always been part of his journey.
“That’s what I’ve done here, so for me, it excites me that they put their faith and trust in me to go do that,”
Purdy reflected.
Career achievements highlight Purdy’s reliable leadership
In just 40 regular-season games, including 36 starts, Purdy has led the 49ers to two NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance. His 2023 season stands out statistically, as he topped the league in multiple categories, including a passer rating of 113.0, a 72.8 QBR, and 13.9 yards per completion. With a 23-13 regular-season record and a 4-2 playoff record, Purdy’s performance surpasses many quarterbacks drafted before him.
Purdy has earned respect within the team, evidenced by his appointment as a team captain in only his second season. His leadership and playmaking ability have become cornerstones for the 49ers organization.

Preparing for 2025 roster changes and team dynamics
Looking ahead to 2025, Purdy is aware of the challenges ahead, especially with changes in the 49ers’ wide receiver group. While key veterans Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle will return to support him, stars like Brandon Aiyuk face uncertain recovery timelines from injuries. Newer players like Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing, after largely untested rookie years, have the opportunity to prove their value to the team.
Purdy is ready to lead and elevate the entire offense, focusing on teamwork and execution to help the 49ers contend for another title run.
Commitment to consistency and team success over personal gains
Purdy openly stated that his approach to preparation and gameplay will remain unchanged despite the substantial contract extension.
“I don’t think my mindset will change, with how I get ready for a game or the moments or anything like that, just because I get paid more for what I do,”
he said.
“I think I’m going to continue to have the same mindset of getting ready and putting my team in the best position to win games and executing.”
“I think I’ve done that at a high level for the past three years and will continue to do that,”
he added.
He also expressed a balanced perspective on negotiation and success, emphasizing team collaboration over individual gains.
“I could hang my hat on the fact that I’ve had success in this league and I’m capable of leading an organization all the way to the end, the Super Bowl,”
Purdy said.
“And so, for me, I know who I am and I’m going to obviously want to get what I deserve, but also surround myself, like I said, with guys around me and not just try to take every penny for myself,”
he explained.
“But that’s the whole point of negotiating, you go throughout that you try to meet in the middle ground and where we ended, I’m extremely grateful and happy with.”
Looking forward: What lies ahead for Purdy and the 49ers
As Purdy and the 49ers prepare for the 2025 season, his focus remains on maintaining high performance and leadership within the team. His proven track record, combined with the trust of the organization, positions him as a vital figure in their quest for continued playoff success and potentially another Super Bowl appearance. With evolving player personnel and increasing competition, Purdy’s confident mindset will be critical to navigating the challenges ahead.
