After earning the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2023, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud faced challenges in his second NFL season. Despite Houston securing the AFC South title and winning a postseason game, Stroud’s performance metrics reflected some setbacks, notably a drop in yards per game from 273.9 to 219.2 and an increase in interceptions from five to twelve. These struggles prompted the Texans to bring Nick Caley on board as offensive coordinator to support Stroud’s development through the offseason.
During a recent press conference, Caley expressed strong confidence in Stroud’s approach and progress this offseason.
“Yeah, he’s locked in every step of the way. No concerns whatsoever,”
Caley stated. He emphasized that Stroud follows a specific routine tailored to his needs, combining football preparation and athletic training.
“I know DeMeco [Ryans] has already hit on this. Everybody has a specific routine relative to their own routine, specific to whatever. Whether it’s football, whether it’s athletic training, et cetera, and he’s doing a great job and he’s out here and he’s working.”
Preparing to Lead the Texans’ Offense in His Third Season
As Stroud moves into his third professional season, Caley pointed out the increased responsibilities that come with being the offense’s leader. He underlined the importance of Stroud developing the skills to adapt and control the offense under changing conditions.
“The more you can do, the better off you’re going to end up being,”
Caley explained, highlighting the great value in a quarterback’s ability to address unexpected situations or unscouted defensive looks during games.
Caley also acknowledged that growth in this area requires time and consistent work.
“It doesn’t happen overnight. That’s for sure. It’s repetition. It’s comfort with the offense. He’s working hard. He’s done a good job. We’ll just keep growing that.”
This commitment to continual improvement reinforces the coaching staff’s optimistic outlook for Stroud’s future.
Looking Ahead: The Impact of C.J. Stroud’s Continued Development
The Texans’ leadership clearly sees Stroud’s offseason progress as critical for both his individual success and the team’s performance. With a focused routine and a diligent work ethic, Stroud is building the foundation to overcome last season’s difficulties and assume a greater command of the Houston offense. Under Nick Caley’s guidance, the Texans anticipate sustained growth from their quarterback, which could translate into more consistent and dynamic on-field results as the 2025 season approaches.
