Kyle Shanahan Reveals Christian McCaffrey’s 2025 Season Health Update After Six Months of Recovery
Christian McCaffrey is healthy and ready for the 2025 season, says 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. Exciting times ahead!

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic about star running back Christian McCaffrey’s return for the 2025 season after nearly six months of rehabilitation from a PCL injury. As the team prepares for another championship push with Brock Purdy at quarterback, Shanahan provided an encouraging update on McCaffrey’s condition during Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

McCaffrey, who earned the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year honors, has been recovering since sustaining his injury in 2024. Shanahan emphasized that McCaffrey is in excellent shape and ready to play, though the coaching staff is carefully managing his workload to ensure a full recovery.

Shanahan’s Optimism About McCaffrey’s Return

Speaking to reporters, Shanahan praised McCaffrey’s readiness and self-awareness during his rehab process. He mentioned the challenge of keeping McCaffrey from pushing himself too hard but acknowledged the player’s understanding of the necessary precautions.

“Christian is as ready as any player I’ve ever been around… We’ve got to kind of protect him from himself, but Christian has a good idea of what he needs to do right now. He’s doing a lot less than he normally would do, but I know he is excited on how healthy he feels and the fact that he can get out there.”

Further reinforcing Shanahan’s confidence, tight end George Kittle expressed his excitement about McCaffrey’s return and his sustained skill level despite the injury downtime.

“He’s still really good at football, so that’s exciting. One year removed from being Offensive Player of the Year. Still very good at football, looks great. … Having Christian out there is awesome.”

Team Changes: Punter Mitch Wishnowsky Released

While McCaffrey remains a foundational player, the 49ers have made notable roster changes this offseason. One significant move was the release of six-year veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky, who was replaced by former Super Bowl champion Thomas Morstead. Shanahan spoke candidly about the difficult decision given Wishnowsky’s contributions and rapport with the team.

Shanahan highlighted both his respect for Wishnowsky and the strategic reasons behind the roster shift, including contract considerations and familiarity between Morstead and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer.

“I love Mitch. He’s one of my favorite guys I’ve been around… The guys love him. But when you just look into contract situations, how last year went, the fact that Morstead became available, [special teams coordinator] Brant [Boyer] being so familiar with him… it ended up making it a decision that wasn’t easy but we felt all confident it was best for our team.”

Wishnowsky was entering the second half of a four-year, $13 million contract signed in 2022 but struggled last season with the league’s lowest net punting average and dealt with both back and knee injuries.

Looking Ahead to the 2025 NFL Season

The 49ers are positioning themselves for a strong campaign in 2025, banking on a healthy McCaffrey to bolster their offense alongside Brock Purdy. Shanahan’s update signals optimism that McCaffrey can regain his form after injury, which will be crucial for the team’s championship aspirations.

With key roster adjustments and focused player management, San Francisco aims to build on its recent successes and remain competitive in a challenging NFL landscape as the new season approaches.
