Fred Warner’s seamless contract extension solidifies his leadership role with the 49ers, guiding the next generation of linebackers.

All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner finalized a three-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers on May 22, ensuring his presence in The Bay through the 2029 NFL season. This extension marks the third major deal that the 49ers have completed this offseason, following those of Brock Purdy and George Kittle, as the organization focuses on retaining its core players ahead of the upcoming 2025 campaign. Warner’s new deal reflects both the team‘s commitment to him and their vision for sustained success.

Warner Reflects on the Smooth Extension Process

Warner expressed deep gratitude for those involved in the negotiations, highlighting the cooperative atmosphere surrounding the deal. He said,

“I’m so grateful to everyone involved including the whole York family, John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan,”

and added,

“It was pretty seamless, and I’m happy for George Kittle and Brock Purdy to get their stuff done too.”

The smooth nature of these extensions emphasizes the organization’s efforts to keep key contributors locked into the team in a timely manner.

From Draft Day Dreams to Veteran Leadership

Warner shared how meaningful the extension is to him personally, noting his journey since being drafted in 2018. He described his early days as a raw, inexperienced player unsure of his position but driven by a strong vision. Reflecting on his growth and bond with the franchise, he said,

“It honestly does mean the world,”

and continued,

“Being able to fulfill my dream of being an NFL player, of being a 49er, I truly feel that same exact way. Signing this deal, it still is a dream to me.”

His extension signals continuity in the linebacker position, vital as the 49ers adjust their defense amid offseason changes.

Warner Leads and Mentors Young Linebackers at OTAs

At the 49ers’ first open Organized Team Activities (OTAs) session, Warner demonstrated strong leadership skills by guiding younger linebackers through drills and team exercises. Participating voluntarily during this Phase 3 of the offseason program, he coached emerging players from the sidelines. One notable rookie receiving his attention was third-round pick Nick Martin, who has quickly gained Warner’s respect. Warner noted,

“I’ve loved everything that Nick has been about since he arrived,”

emphasizing Martin’s eagerness to learn and his athletic ability on the field.

He complimented Martin’s approach, saying,

“In some of those situations, guys don’t want to seem like they’re like ‘too cool’ or I don’t know what it is… But, he’s come in and asked me every single question know to man.”

Warner also praised Martin’s quickness and mindset, stating,

“I’ve seen the athletic ability flash on the field in the way he closes. He closes space really quickly. He already has the great mindset of want to learn. I’m really happy with where he’s at.”

Significance of Warner’s Role in the 49ers’ Defense Moving Forward

Fred Warner’s contract extension not only secures a cornerstone defender but also positions him as a key mentor for the younger players rebuilding San Francisco’s linebacker unit. His blend of experience, skill, and leadership will be invaluable as the team prepares for future campaigns. Keeping Warner under contract through 2029 ensures stability at the Mike linebacker position and supports the organization‘s broader strategy of developing a strong, cohesive defense.

As the 49ers continue OTAs and approach training camp, Warner’s guidance will be critical in helping rookies and less experienced players adjust and elevate their performances, ultimately aiming to sustain the team’s competitive edge.
