Khalil Rountree Jr., known as one of the most devastating UFC strikers, made a memorable impression with a powerful soccer kick knockout during his time on The Ultimate Fighter. The 25-year-old contender originally showcased this explosive striking ability while competing on season 23 of the reality show in 2016, years before rising to prominence in the UFC light heavyweight division.
Khalil Rountree’s Breakout Moment on The Ultimate Fighter
Rountree appeared on The Ultimate Fighter season 23 to compete for a UFC contract, bringing an aggressive and dynamic fighting style to the bouts. Although he did not win the light heavyweight tournament, his performances made a lasting mark on fans and UFC officials. In his opening fight on the show, Rountree stunned his opponent Muhammed DeReese with a head kick and punches that visibly rocked him.
Instead of continuing with common ground-and-pound techniques, Rountree pulled back and delivered two powerful soccer kicks to DeReese’s body, resulting in a decisive finish. This rare and devastating move caught the attention of UFC President Dana White, who reacted with clear astonishment to the finishing sequence. White said, “That guy’s a f—— animal,” adding,
“That guy’s going to be tough to beat…”

Evolution After UFC 307 and Upcoming UFC Baku Main Event
Since that early highlight, Rountree has developed into the #7-ranked UFC Light Heavyweight contender. His recent fight against Alex Pereira at UFC 307 last October demonstrated his skill and resilience as he pushed the champion through strong early rounds. However, Pereira’s experience and striking prowess turned the tide in the championship rounds, ending the match with a TKO following a broken nose Rountree suffered in the fourth round.

As a Muay Thai striker by discipline, Rountree acknowledged the need to evolve his skill set after that defeat to continue pursuing his championship aspirations. He is now scheduled to face former champion Jamahal Hill in the main event of UFC Baku on June 21, aiming to prove his growth and readiness to compete at the highest level.
Training with Elite Coaches and Champions to Sharpen Skills
Preparing for the upcoming showdown at UFC Baku, Rountree has committed to refining his skills by training with some of the best coaches and champions across multiple disciplines. He works with Christian Knowles, the renowned coach of kickboxing star Jonathan Haggerty, as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Marcus Buchecha.
Additionally, Rountree has gained valuable sparring experience alongside former UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold, which he credits with helping him elevate his performance. On his YouTube channel, Rountree remarked,
“Having guys at this level being able to train with me has been super amazing,”
and further added,
“I’m doing my best to elevate myself as an athlete.”
