The Utah Mammoth have secured defenseman Nick DeSimone with a one-year contract, continuing their focus on strengthening their defensive lineup. The deal marks a significant step as the team looks to build on the momentum from the 2024-25 season by retaining a key veteran presence on the blue line.

Experienced Defenseman Returns After Solid First Season With Utah

Nick DeSimone, 30, who appeared in 20 games for the Mammoth last season, signed a one-year contract worth $800,000. DeSimone contributed 1 goal and 5 assists during his initial campaign with Utah, demonstrating his ability to move the puck and compete effectively. His return offers continuity and leadership to a team eager to develop its younger players.

Bill Armstrong, general manager of the Utah Mammoth, expressed confidence in DeSimone’s role, stating,

“We are very pleased to have Nick return to the Mammoth. Nick adds a veteran presence to our blue line and is a good role model for our young team. He skates well, competes hard, and moves the puck effectively. We are excited to have him on our roster.”

Professional Journey Through NHL and AHL Teams

DeSimone joined Utah after being claimed off waivers from the New Jersey Devils in January. In addition to his NHL appearances, he also skated in 12 American Hockey League games for the Utica Comets last season, registering three assists. His NHL career spans 58 games with Utah, New Jersey, and the Calgary Flames, totaling 3 goals and 10 assists since his debut with Calgary in the 2022-23 season.

Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 194 pounds, DeSimone has built extensive experience in the AHL, having played 353 games with multiple teams including the Comets, Calgary Wranglers, Stockton Heat, Rochester Americans, and San Jose Barracuda. His stats include 38 goals and 141 assists, along with leadership roles as alternate captain during his time in San Jose and Calgary.

Strong Leadership and Playoff Experience

DeSimone’s leadership qualities are reflected in his roles as alternate captain for two seasons and his playoff experience. He has participated in 43 Calder Cup Playoff games across several teams, recording 6 goals and 14 assists. This depth of postseason experience adds value to the Mammoth’s roster as they aim for further success.

Originally from East Amherst, New York, DeSimone also boasts a solid collegiate career at Union College, where he accumulated 15 goals and 33 assists in 109 NCAA games between 2014 and 2017.
