Talanoa Hufanga Joins Broncos: Ready to Earn Respect and Elevate an Already ‘Incredible’ Defense
Talanoa Hufanga joins the Broncos, determined to earn respect and contribute to the team’s success this season.

Talanoa Hufanga, a highly experienced defensive back, has officially joined the Denver Broncos, eager to prove himself and contribute to one of the NFL’s top defenses. Known for his achievements with San Francisco, including appearances in NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl, Hufanga arrives in Englewood, Colorado, intent on earning the respect of his new teammates through hard work and dedication.

Proven Track Record But Focused on Starting Fresh

Standing 6-foot and weighing 200 pounds, Hufanga’s impressive career features accolades such as being a first-team Associated Press All-Pro, playing under the mentorship of Hall of Famer Troy Polamalu, and earning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors while at USC. Despite this, the veteran safety remains humble about his move to Denver.

“You have to humble yourself each and every year, because it’s a clean slate regardless if you’ve been there or not,”

Hufanga explained after the Broncos’ first open OTA practice.

“I’ve been to a Super Bowl and I’ve been to NFC Championships. That has nothing to do with me being here. I have to come in here and earn the respect from my teammates first and foremost. I have to go out there and show them that I am willing to work and show them things that I have seen in the playoffs that is different than the regular season [and things that I have] seen in the Super Bowl that are different than the regular season.”

He further emphasized the importance of teamwork and shared commitment:

“But at the end of the day, we have to go through that journey together. That’s going to be something that is exciting — that we have each other’s backs and we go out there and compete.”

Drawn to Denver’s Promising Defense and Team Culture

Hufanga’s decision to join the Broncos was influenced by his confidence not only in quarterback Bo Nix’s potential but also in Denver’s defensive strength. Under Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph, the Broncos ranked third in scoring defense in 2024, and the addition of key players like Hufanga, Dre Greenlaw, and first-round draft pick Jahdae Barron only bolsters the unit.

“This defense is incredible,” Hufanga remarked.

“You look from top to bottom, it’s just players. So for me, I just wanted to humbly come in, earn their respect and join a crew that already did really well last year.”

Sean Payton Highlights Hufanga’s Communication and Physicality

Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton, while noting the difficulty of evaluating a safety during offseason activities without pads, has praised Hufanga’s skill set and toughness. Speaking at the NFL Annual Meeting in March, Payton said,

“Well, he’s a great communicator, he’s super intelligent, his experience and there is a toughness about the way he plays.”

Payton continued,

“Sometimes you can be a second responder [and] sometimes a first responder, and he appears first a lot on-screen. There’s a style to how he plays. … Because he’s so physical and so quick to support, he’s had a handful of injuries, but there’s a toughness to his game.”

Injuries as a Test of Resilience and Motivation

Injuries have impacted Hufanga’s playing time recently; he has appeared in only 17 games over the past two seasons. Nevertheless, he views these challenges as part of the sport and a source of motivation to persevere.

“Injury is part of the game,”

Hufanga said.

“Troy Polamalu always told me, ‘It’s a 100 percent injury rate regardless.’ For you to go in, you have to understand what comes with it. So every injury that I’ve came [across], I think it’s just a testament to who I am and to battle through adversity through those moments. [It is] something that I’ve taken in and wear on my sleeve when I go out on the field.”

Strong On-Field Performance Demonstrates Impact

When healthy, Hufanga has produced impressive results. His 2022 season earned him a Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro honors, helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl. Over the past two years spanning 27 games, he recorded 149 tackles, six tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, two sacks, 12 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, seven interceptions, and one touchdown.

Inspiration Drawn from Denver’s Safety Legends

Joining the Broncos carries special meaning for Hufanga, as the franchise has a rich tradition of exceptional safeties. He hopes to live up to the legacy of Hall of Famers like Steve Atwater, John Lynch, and Brian Dawkins.

“There is a long line of history here,”

he said.

“My goal is to represent them the right way.”

Outlook for Hufanga and the Broncos Moving Forward

With a foundation of existing talent and a strong defensive identity, the Denver Broncos welcome Talanoa Hufanga with high expectations. His determination to prove himself and ability to lead on the field are poised to help elevate a defense that already ranked among the NFL’s best. As Hufanga settles in and builds chemistry with teammates under Sean Payton’s guidance, the Broncos aim to harness this new energy to compete at the highest level in the coming seasons.
