Vasilije Micic Reflects on “Crazy” NBA Journey and Teases Emotional EuroLeague Return Soon
Vasilije Micic reflects on his NBA journey while anticipating a triumphant return to EuroLeague competition.

Vasilije Micic recently attended the EuroLeague Final Four in Abu Dhabi, UAE, not as a player competing for the title, but as an honored member of the All-25 EuroLeague Team. Fresh from two seasons in the NBA, the Serbian guard reflected on his journey in basketball’s biggest league and hinted at a much-anticipated return to the EuroLeague, sharing insights into his evolving career.

The Challenges and Lessons from Micic’s NBA Stint

After signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2023 at age 29, Micic took a bold step into the NBA, arriving with a decorated European resume that included back-to-back EuroLeague championships and multiple MVP awards. His transition, however, proved demanding. Reflecting on his time in the NBA, Micic described the experience as “crazy” but also rewarding.

At the same time I took useful lessons. I feel I would’ve regretted it if I didn’t go there. Just from an experience standpoint. There are top players over there. Definitely unique when it comes to talent. Work ethic. The guy [Shai Gilgeous-Alexander] who just became MVP was always first in practice. A great leader, always. The Joker [Nikola Jokic] is the same. Kevin Durant, I had a chance of working with him the last two months and see his way of working. Nothing is accidental.

Micic emphasized how every element of the NBA—from the work ethic of players like Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic to the meticulous approach of stars like Durant—is deliberate and highly competitive. At the same time, he acknowledged that he didn’t fully align with the Oklahoma City Thunder’s structure or plans when he joined.

Also the league is developing in their own direction,

Micic added.

“As for me, I think Ι wasn’t so suitable [to the team – Thunder] in the moment I came. And with the organization when it comes to their own ideas.”

Trades and Growing Role in the NBA

Micic’s journey in the NBA involved several team changes. After a limited role with the Thunder, he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in January 2024, where he enjoyed increased playing time and a solid statistical output, averaging 10.8 points, 6.2 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game. His NBA path continued when the Phoenix Suns acquired him in February 2024.

The guard reflected on his opportunities and the nature of the NBA’s competitive environment.

It’s OK. Whenever I got the chance I feel I used it well. I always gave myself a chance and tried to play the best I can,

Micic shared.

But it’s really a lot about opportunity there. Momentum. The league is becoming younger and younger. That’s the philosophy of the NBA. But I feel happy about my two years over there.

Teasing a Return to EuroLeague Glory

While the Phoenix Suns hold an option to retain Micic for the upcoming season, reports strongly indicate that the veteran guard is preparing to return to the EuroLeague, where he previously thrived as both a champion and MVP. This return may come with a lucrative contract, potentially making him the highest-paid player outside the NBA.

Micic expressed a deep longing to compete in the EuroLeague again, highlighting his passion for meaningful, championship-driven basketball.

Always, Micic commented when asked if he missed the EuroLeague while playing in the NBA.

When I came to the EuroLeague for the first time with Bayern Munich, it was my dream. It was my dream to fulfill that. Later on I achieved everything I had dreamed. I like to play basketball where I can fight for championships and for the wins. I never promised wins or championships. But it’s a desire that is with me. Thank God, I proved it on the court as well. So, that’s the missing part for me always. Meaningful basketball.

The Future Outlook for Micic and EuroLeague Ambitions

Vasilije Micic’s NBA experience has been marked by valuable lessons, challenges, and adjustments, yet he remains optimistic about what lies ahead. His desire to return to EuroLeague competition reflects a strong passion for winning and meaningful play that aligns with his most successful years in Europe. As the EuroLeague looks forward to welcoming back one of its brightest stars, fans and clubs alike anticipate a significant impact from Micic’s comeback, both on and off the court.
