Von Miller Shuts Down Retirement Rumors, Eyes Four Potential NFL Teams for 2025 Season
Von Miller plans to extend his NFL career, aiming to play in the 2025 season and possibly 2026.

After a distinguished 15-year NFL career highlighted by two Super Bowl victories, Von Miller has dismissed rumors that he might retire, confirming his intention to play in the 2025 NFL season. The veteran pass-rusher shared this update during a recent interview, indicating he remains motivated to compete and could even extend his career beyond next year if his performance allows. With several teams in need of a veteran presence on the defensive line, Miller is focused on finding the right fit for the upcoming year.

Von Miller Commits to Playing in the 2025 Season

The eight-time Pro Bowler, now 36 years old, was clear about his plans during a Wednesday interview.

“I got this year on the books for sure, I’m going to play this coming up season, just got to find a team to play on,”

Miller said, via Andrew Mason.

“We’ll just keep doing it one year at a time. If I had another great year this year, then I’ll play the next year after that, but we’ll just keep doing it one year at a time.”

Despite his age and the natural winding down of his career, Miller is determined to remain active in the league.

Miller began his NFL journey with the Denver Broncos, spending the first 10.5 seasons in Denver before moving to the Buffalo Bills for three seasons spanning 2022 to 2024. His departure from the Bills came in March when the team released him as a cost-saving measure that freed over $8 million in salary cap space. Miller has appeared in the AFC title game three times, most recently with Buffalo, and has been a key contributor in multiple Super Bowl victories, including the Broncos’ win over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 where he earned MVP honors, and the Los Angeles Rams’ victory against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI with two crucial sacks.

Von Miller’s Recent Performance Demonstrates He Can Still Contribute

In the 2024 NFL season, Miller proved he remains an impactful player by recording six sacks, tied for the second-highest total on the Bills. While he might not be the star role he once was, Miller’s ability to rush the passer and provide veteran leadership make him an attractive option for teams seeking experience and depth on their defensive lines heading into 2025.

Philadelphia Eagles Consider Veteran Pass-Rusher to Bolster Defensive Line

The Philadelphia Eagles have faced significant defensive line departures in free agency, losing key players such as Josh Sweat, who led the team in sacks with 8.5 in 2024, and Milton Williams, who ranked third with five sacks. Philadelphia does not necessarily require Miller to start but seeks a reliable pass-rusher to fill important roles in passing situations. Miller’s well-rounded experience and leadership qualities could provide valuable mentorship to younger teammates. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has a history of pursuing seasoned talent to strengthen his defense, making a short-term deal with Miller plausible.

Washington Commanders’ Defensive Line Needs Remain Unfulfilled

The Washington Commanders recently lost their only player with double-digit sacks in 2024, Dante Fowler, who signed with the Dallas Cowboys in free agency. Though Washington signed pass-rushers Deatrich Wise, Javon Kinlaw, and Jacob Martin this offseason, there is still room for improvement. The team has made bold moves offensively by adding star players like Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil, signaling a willingness to invest in defensive upgrades as well. Bringing in a veteran like Miller could help stabilize the defensive front and improve their pass rush efficacy in 2025.

The Detroit Lions Face a Challenging Schedule, Making a Veteran Edge Rusher Valuable

The Detroit Lions’ 2025 schedule presents daunting challenges, including matchups against elite quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts, Matthew Stafford, and Dak Prescott. This demanding slate underscores the need for a potent pass rush. While Aidan Hutchinson remains a strong defensive asset, the Lions lack other consistent threats on the edge. Hutchinson missed much of last season due to a severe tibia and fibula injury and may not return at full strength immediately. Miller’s presence could provide depth and insurance as Hutchinson regains form, enhancing the Lions’ ability to pressure quarterbacks in critical moments.

Houston Texans Offer a Homecoming and Competitive Opportunity

Playing for the Houston Texans would bring Miller back to his roots, as he attended high school and college in Texas. Signing with Houston could allow him to conclude his career where it began, adding sentimental value to the move. Additionally, the Texans are currently building a strong defensive front with pass-rushers like Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson. Miller could carve out a situational role focused on key passing downs, joining forces with Will Anderson, the 2023 Defensive Rookie of the Year. This pairing would unite two of the league’s most decorated defensive rookies in recent history.

Miller’s Prospects and Legacy as the 2025 Season Approaches

At 36, Miller is unlikely to command the large contract he signed with Buffalo in 2022—a six-year, $122 million deal—but his skills and experience still hold value in the league. Pass rushers remain highly sought after in the NFL, so there will likely be considerable interest if Miller agrees to a reasonable deal. Should he play in 2025, Miller will be among a select group of former Super Bowl MVPs still active, joining stars such as Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Joe Flacco, and Cooper Kupp. Aaron Rodgers could also join this group if he plays this upcoming year. Miller’s determination to continue competing speaks to his enduring passion for the game and his desire to contribute meaningfully as the league evolves.
