Jamie Benn Eyes Contract Extension to Stay with Dallas Stars Despite UFA Status
Jamie Benn expresses strong desire for a Dallas Stars contract extension, aiming to remain in Texas for his career.

Jamie Benn, the Dallas Stars captain, is an unrestricted free agent for the 2025-26 season, but he intends to continue playing with the team. Despite not having a contract in place yet, Benn expressed a clear desire to stay in Dallas, where he has spent his entire 16-year NHL career.

I’m going into the summer planning on playing next year,

Benn said during the Stars’ end-of-season media session.

… I don’t see myself going anywhere else. This is all I know. So hopefully we can get something figured out and then I don’t have to answer these questions.

Reflecting on Another Playoff Heartbreak

The recent season ended with the Stars losing in the Western Conference Final for the third consecutive year, falling in five games to the Edmonton Oilers. Benn acknowledged the disappointment of falling short again after coming so close.

Three years in a row now, you get that close and you come up short … obviously not a good feeling,

Benn admitted following the team’s elimination.

In the playoffs, Benn contributed one goal and two assists over 18 games, adding 16 goals and 33 assists during the regular season across 80 contests.

Support and Praise from Teammates

Benn’s leadership and long-standing presence with the Stars have earned him strong support within the team. Forward Matt Duchene emphasized the importance of keeping Benn on the roster for the long term.

I think it would be a crime if he’s not a Dallas Star for life,

Duchene said during the post-season media availability.

Looking Ahead for the Dallas Stars and Benn

As negotiations for a contract extension develop, the Dallas Stars hope to retain their veteran captain, whose experience and loyalty are valued assets. Benn’s intention to stay supports the organization’s desire for stability and leadership as they aim to advance beyond the Western Conference Final in future seasons.
