He reflected on how his childhood involvement in various sports eventually led him to embrace basketball as his true calling.

Dončić explained,

“Well, for me, I wasn’t good at any other sports, except soccer,”

He described playing multiple sports like tennis, soccer, basketball, and volleyball, emphasizing that participating in sports was simply enjoyable for him. After school, he would go outside frequently, mostly choosing basketball over others, showing an early connection to the game that would shape his future.

The Role of Being a Ball Boy and Family Influence

Dončić’s father, Saša Dončić, who had a professional basketball career from 1993 to 2010 and then coached until 2022, played a significant role in his development. Luka often attended his father’s games and served as a ball boy for Olimpija, a Slovenian club where Saša played and coached.

The former ball boy shared,

“Yeah, for sure,”

when asked if his father’s career influenced him, adding that he spent much time around the sport in this role.

He recalled being a ball boy during Euroleague games for Olimpija and using this time to immerse himself in basketball. Luka also mentioned how he played basketball before, during, and after games, including at halftime, which helped deepen his love for the sport.
