Lando Norris Jokes Max Verstappen’s Spanish GP Chaos Was Straight Out of Mario Kart
Lando Norris jokes that Max Verstappen's Monaco antics resembled a Mario Kart moment during a heated race finish.

At the Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren’s Lando Norris humorously compared Max Verstappen’s daring pass on George Russell late in the race to a moment from the Mario Kart video game. This comment emphasized the unpredictable and chaotic nature of Verstappen’s maneuver during an already tense race weekend. Meanwhile, Norris’s teammate Oscar Piastri claimed his fifth victory of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, further extending his lead in the World Championship standings.

Final Laps Intensify with Safety Car and Strategy Battles

The closing stages of the Spanish Grand Prix became highly strategic after a Safety Car deployment, triggered by a power unit failure suffered by Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Verstappen found himself unexpectedly assigned hard tyres by Red Bull, a choice that appeared to leave him unsettled. After the restart, Verstappen narrowly avoided spinning at the final corner before making slight contact with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who overtook him on the main straight to claim third place.

George Russell also challenged Verstappen at Turn 1, leading to minor contact that forced Verstappen off the track. He managed to maintain position despite this, but was soon ordered by his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to give the place back to Russell. Verstappen was visibly frustrated by this request but complied briefly by slowing on the straight approaching Turn 5. However, in the ensuing corner, his car collided firmly with Russell’s Mercedes.

As a result of this incident, Verstappen received a 10-second penalty which dropped him from fifth to tenth by the race’s end, overshadowing his performance in the race’s latter moments.

The Incident Between Max Verstappen and George Russell Draws Post-Race Attention

The heated collision and subsequent penalty became a major talking point during the post-race cooldown, as drivers prepared for the podium ceremony. Leclerc described Verstappen’s near-spin at the final corner after the restart, saying,

“At exit of 14, I thought he would put it in the wall.”

Norris expressed surprise at Verstappen’s finishing position:

“What happened to Max? He finished 10th.”

Leclerc then clarified:

“He got a penalty.”

The drivers watched a replay of Verstappen’s impressive save, leading Piastri to exclaim:

“Oh my God!”

Leclerc added commentary about the contact during the pass:

“Look at that! And then we touched.”

Norris joked about the tightness of the racing:

“You almost touch here, huh?”

Leclerc responded:

“No, we touched here.”

Initially, Piastri misunderstood which incident led to Verstappen’s penalty:

“He got a penalty for that?”

Norris guessed the place surrender was the cause:

“Ah, he let him past?”

The key moment of contact between Verstappen and Russell then played on screen, prompting Norris to deliver his humorous quip:

“I’ve done that before. In Mario Kart.”

Tyre Debris and Track Conditions Add to Challenges Facing Drivers

Oscar Piastri pointed to “marbles,” or loose rubber debris on the track, as a possible reason for Verstappen’s difficulty during the final laps. He described how going slightly off the racing line at Turn 1 affected his own handling after lapping Alpine’s Franco Colapinto. Piastri mimicked the understeer he experienced, highlighting the tricky driving conditions.

Leclerc also noted that when Verstappen was on fresher tyres attempting to pass, the Ferrari driver had to stay near the middle of the track to avoid Verstappen driving into the marbles at the edge:

“Yeah. When Max was overtaking me on fresh tyres, I was just trying to stay in the middle so he was going all the way to the marbles!”

McLaren’s Strong Performance and Verstappen’s Setbacks Shape Championship Prospects

Oscar Piastri’s dominant win in Barcelona demonstrates McLaren’s growth and helps build his advantage in the 2025 World Championship race. However, Max Verstappen’s struggles during the Spanish Grand Prix, compounded by his collision and subsequent penalty, serve as a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in Formula 1’s fine margins. The tensions and frustrations visible among drivers, engineers, and teams underline the pressure points in this highly competitive season.

With the championship battle intensifying, Verstappen’s team will be eager to regain composure and avoid similar incidents in upcoming races, while Piastri and McLaren aim to consolidate their lead and momentum.
