Michael McManus, known on X as Deloris and a friend of A’ja Wilson, openly criticized LA Sparks guard Kelsey Plum following her performance in Sunday’s game against the Phoenix Suns. McManus highlighted Plum’s shooting struggles, pointing out her inefficiency as the team’s franchise player.
In that game, Plum made just 4 of 19 shot attempts, finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Despite going a perfect 5 for 5 from the free-throw line, her shooting woes contributed to the Sparks falling short in an 85-80 loss. The team’s start to the season has been difficult, winning only two of eight games so far.
Currently, Plum is averaging 22.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, but the team’s lack of depth seems to be magnifying its struggles.
“Kelsey is learning that being the star of a team as a PG ain’t easy. Going 4/18 as the franchise player is nasty business,” McManus tweeted.
A’ja Wilson’s Praise Preceded the Sparks’ Defeat in Plum’s Homecoming
The Sparks recently faced the Las Vegas Aces in a regular-season game that marked a homecoming for Kelsey Plum, following her trade from the Aces to the Sparks. Ahead of the matchup, A’ja Wilson expressed admiration for Plum’s dedication and skill, acknowledging her impact during their time as teammates.
“It’s always KP,” Wilson said. “She just had a mentality of like, ‘I just want to do better. I want to be the best.’ So I am grateful to be her teammate, was her teammate. I am excited to see her again, she won us two championships here, so obviously we are going to give everything we can, the energy, the positive vibes towards her.”
Despite Wilson’s respect, she dominated the game with 35 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists, leading the Aces to a 96-81 victory and spoiling Plum’s return. Plum struggled again, scoring 17 points on 6 of 19 shooting and just 1 of 7 from beyond the arc.
Challenges Facing Kelsey Plum and the LA Sparks
As the primary ball handler and franchise player for the Sparks, Kelsey Plum’s early struggles underscore broader issues within the team, including minimal roster depth. Plum’s shooting percentages have been below expectations, which has coincided with the Sparks’ sluggish season start.
The team’s performance raises questions about how Plum and the Sparks will turn things around moving forward, especially in such a competitive league. While Plum’s talent is undeniable, consistent production amid team challenges will be crucial for future success.
