Luka Doncic Opens Up on LA Culture Shock: LeBron James Agrees on Traffic and Beach Life Adjustments
Luka Doncic embraces LA's ocean charm while navigating the cultural shock and notorious traffic of his new home.

LA Lakers star Luka Doncic recently appeared on the Mind the Game podcast, hosted by LeBron James and Steve Nash, where he discussed his experience adjusting to LA culture since his move in February. Doncic highlighted the biggest contrasts in lifestyle and environment, giving insight into how the transition from his European roots to Southern California has affected him.

During the podcast, Steve Nash asked Doncic about his adaptation to life in Los Angeles, a city vastly different from his home country of Slovenia, which has a population of around two million compared to nearly 40 million in Southern California. Malgré ce choc culturel important, Doncic expressed appreciation for the natural surroundings in LA, especially the presence of the ocean.

Adapting to Life in Los Angeles: The Ocean and Traffic Challenges

Doncic described his excitement about living in the only NBA city with access to the ocean, explaining how quickly the seaside became a highlight for him. He said,

“Well, first of all, like this is the first city I’ve played in that has an ocean. And I really like the ocean. So that was nice. First thing, I mean, after a couple of days, that was the first thing on my mind.

He admitted that while he enjoys LA, the traffic presents significant challenges. Reflecting on this aspect, he stated,

“It’s a lot. I like it. I like it very much. The only thing is the traffic. It’s the f***ing traffic.”

LeBron James resonated with Doncic’s views and shared his own thoughts about the transition, reminding the audience of his early conversation with Doncic after the trade:

“The first thing I ask you is, ‘Are you adjusting?’ I like the beach. It’s the first thing you see, I like the beach.”

Despite the challenges posed by the busy roads, Doncic said driving remains an enjoyable activity for him, and he has taken time to explore nearby areas such as Santa Barbara, only a two-hour drive from LA, enhancing his experience living in California.

Upcoming Contract Decisions Shape Doncic’s Future with the Lakers

Looking ahead, Luka Doncic faces an important decision regarding his contract with the LA Lakers. The 2025-26 season is the final guaranteed year on his current deal, but he holds a player option for the 2026-27 season. This option gives Doncic the choice to become a free agent next year if he decides not to extend his stay with the team.

The upcoming season will be crucial for both Doncic and the Lakers organization. A successful year together could lead to a continued partnership, while another disappointing campaign might prompt the Slovenian star to consider opportunities elsewhere.

Doncic’s adjustment to LA’s culture, combined with his on-court performance, will play a significant role in shaping his future trajectory and the Lakers’ championship aspirations moving forward.
