Luka Doncic Opens Up on New Life in LA: Loves the Ocean but Struggles with Traffic Adjustments
Luka Doncic embraces his new life in Los Angeles, enjoying the ocean while navigating city traffic and celebrity culture.

When Luka Dončić was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, the 26-year-old faced significant changes both on and off the basketball court. After spending over six years in Texas, Dončić had to adjust to a much different environment in Los Angeles, a city known for its crowded streets and dense population, unlike the more spacious areas of Dallas. This transition brought new experiences that impacted his daily life beyond basketball.

Adapting to LA’s Unique Lifestyle and Environment

During a guest segment on Mind the Game, Dončić discussed his adjustment period after joining the Lakers. Steve Nash pointed out that Los Angeles has a larger population than Dončić’s home country of Slovenia, highlighting the massive scale of the city. Despite this, Dončić noted that the cultural shift was minimal, having already spent an extended time in the United States. While the Hollywood atmosphere didn’t faze him, the presence of the ocean was the aspect of LA that excited him the most.

Well, first of all, this is the first city I’ve played in that has an ocean, and I really like the ocean,

the Slovenian guard revealed.

I mean, after a couple of days, that was the first thing on my mind, you know?

He expressed a clear affection for his new surroundings, though he did acknowledge one major drawback.

The only thing is the traffic.

Familiar Faces and the Celebrity Factor Didn’t Shake Luka Much

Despite playing in front of large, high-profile crowds for nearly ten years, the celebrities watching games at Crypto.com Arena didn’t particularly stand out to Dončić. He remarked that having famous people courtside was impressive but didn’t require much adjustment for him.

Every time there’s famous people, you know, watching our game, sitting courtside. That’s amazing. But no, [it’s not an adjustment], not that much,

Luka said, maintaining a sense of composure in the presence of LA’s star-studded audience.

Luka’s Exploration of the Greater Los Angeles Area and Nearby Destinations

LeBron James added that Dončić’s first comments about settling into LA centered on his love of the beach. Dončić has also enjoyed driving around the city but admitted he has yet to explore many surrounding areas extensively. When asked if he had ventured beyond LA’s city limits, Dončić needed clarification, highlighting how broad the region actually is.

What’s cool about LA, we think about LA as a big city but within an hour and a half, two hours, you go Santa Barbara, San Diego. You could go to the mountains, Orange County, you go all over the place,

Nash explained.

Malibu, there’s a million places to go within two hours, right? … So, you like to drive…

Although many of California’s famous landmarks and destinations are reachable within a short drive, Dončić has only visited a few so far. His first choice for a trip is Santa Barbara, a place he enjoyed previously.

The first place I would try is Santa Barbara because I went there when I was 17 … I went to P3. So, I really liked that,

he said, showing enthusiasm for future explorations.

Guidance from Lakers Veterans Could Help Luka Settle Fully in LA

With only a few months spent as a Laker, Dončić still has plenty to discover about his new home. The presence of seasoned players like LeBron James and Steve Nash offers him knowledgeable guidance for navigating life in the sprawling LA area. Their support may help Dončić become more familiar with the city while balancing his evolving role on the basketball team.
