Michael Pierce retires after nine impactful seasons as a Ravens defensive lineman, celebrated for his remarkable run-stopping skills.
Michael Pierce, the Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman, has officially ended his nine-season NFL career, leaving a strong legacy as one of the league’s top nose tackles. Known for his powerful run defense, Pierce announced his retirement in March 2024, concluding his tenure primarily with the Ravens, where he made his biggest impact.
From Undrafted Free Agent to Defensive Anchor
Starting as an undrafted free agent in 2016, Pierce’s journey to NFL success was remarkable. A native of Daphne, Alabama, and a graduate of Samford University, he earned a spot on Baltimore’s 53-man roster after a standout preseason performance, which included a fumble recovery touchdown. Over nine seasons, including seven with Baltimore, Pierce developed a reputation for disrupting opposing offenses and closing running lanes.
Career Achievements and Memorable Final Snap
Throughout his career, Pierce appeared in 99 games, recording 238 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and oneinterception. In a memorable twist, his lone interception occurred on the very last regular-season play of his career. Against the Cleveland Browns, Pierce intercepted quarterback Bailey Zappe after prematurely kneeling on the field, sparking a viral moment as teammates celebrated around the 355-pound lineman.

“After nine seasons, after much prayer, talking to my family, just going through the grind, man, and just being satisfied with there I am, looking forward to doing other things in life, I just decided to call it a career,”
and added,
“It’s been a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful nine years.”
He expressed deep appreciation for those who supported his path, including his father for introducing him to football, former GM Ozzie Newsome for bringing him into the NFL, and current and past coaches and teammates who helped build his confidence. Pierce also thanked Baltimore’s current General Manager Eric DeCosta for bringing him back from the Vikings, allowing him to finish strong with three productive seasons at the end of his career.
“They gave me a chance when not many people were willing to take a chance on me. So I’m grateful for them,”
Pierce said of the Ravens.
Role in Baltimore’s Dominant Run Defense and Transition in Final Seasons
Pierce was a crucial part of the Ravens’ formidable run defense, which ranked first in the NFL last season by allowing just 80.1 yards per game. Baltimore’s defense consistently ranked in the top five during Pierce’s seven years with the team. In recent seasons, Pierce began sharing playing time with teammate Travis Jones, shifting his snap count from 55% in 2023 down to 32% in 2024, while maintaining his effectiveness.
Off the field, Pierce formed a close bond with fellow lineman Brent Urban, together known as the “Fun Bunch,” creating a strong presence in the locker room and on the field.
Ravens Prepare for Next Chapter with New Addition
With Pierce’s retirement now official, the Ravens moved swiftly to fill the roster vacancy by signing experienced defensive tackle John Jenkins. Baltimore looks to maintain its stout run defense foundation as it adjusts to life without one of its most respected veterans.
Legacy of Determination and Inspiration
Michael Pierce’s career stands as a testament to perseverance and hard work, illustrating how an undrafted player can rise to prominence in the NFL. His final interception and heartfelt farewell highlight not only his skill but the admiration he earned throughout his time with the Ravens. As he steps away from professional football, Pierce’s journey will inspire future players navigating similarly challenging paths.
