Ricky Stenhouse Jr. expresses frustration after a wreck in Nashville leaves him finishing last in the race.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., positioned 13th in the regular season standings and just 10 points above the playoff cutoff, faced a devastating setback during the Nashville Cup race. Despite a tough season in terms of speed, Stenhouse and his single-car Hyak Motorsports Chevrolet team had maintained steady performances, ranking second among drivers for laps completed and holding an average finish of 16.8. However, a collision in Stage 2 abruptly ended his race and playoff chances.

While running 17th, Stenhouse was hit from behind by Carson Hocevar, forcing his No. 47 Chevrolet into the outside wall. This crash eliminated him from the race, resulting in a 39th-place finish and earning him only a single point, severely jeopardizing his playoff position.

Stenhouse details the moment of impact and its aftermath

Reflecting on the incident, Stenhouse described Hocevar’s approach just before the crash, explaining that Hocevar attempted to dive into the corner from a significant distance behind, but ended up overcommitting and striking his car’s rear bumper.

He said,

“A lap or two before, he [Hocevar] tried to dive in there from about ten car lengths back and then that time, I just opened my entry a little bit and he over-charged the corner and drilled us in the rear bumper.”

Although Stenhouse acknowledged that such aggressive moves were somewhat typical from Hocevar, he did not expect it during that point in the race. He expressed disappointment since his Chevrolet was showing slight improvements after the restart, despite struggling with tire wear on the right rear during the run.

Ending his NASCAR on Prime interview on a firm note, Stenhouse warned,

“Bummed our day ended like that, definitely will have something to do about it at one point.”

Carson Hocevar’s response to the collision

Following the race, Carson Hocevar, who finished second, gave a non-apologetic response concerning the incident. He said he had not yet reviewed the replay but considered the move a common aggressive maneuver given the momentum he carried.

“I mean, I haven’t seen the replay,”

Hocevar stated.

“I mean, I’ve seen a bunch of people just kind of do that same sort of move and get shipped, and I think he was the only one to wreck or for me to wreck him, or maybe there was one more. But I feel like that was just a common move with how big of a run I had. But I didn’t see it.”

“I’m sure he’ll want to talk about it. I’ll talk about it. We’ll look at the replay. But I have no idea until I see it.”

Implications of the crash on the NASCAR Cup race and playoff scenarios

Stenhouse’s crash at Nashville carries significant consequences, especially since he had been running a consistent season despite a lack of outright speed. Losing ground this late in the regular season threatens his place in the playoff lineup, putting pressure on the driver and his team to recover points in upcoming races.

With Carson Hocevar’s aggressive on-track behavior now under scrutiny, the incident could lead to further conversations within NASCAR about racing conduct and penalties. Given Stenhouse’s comment signaling a response, tensions are expected to remain high between the two drivers moving forward as the Cup series draws nearer to the playoffs.
