Former American tennis star Andy Roddick has applauded Frances Tiafoe for his remarkable progress at the 2024 French Open. Seeded 15th, Tiafoe reached the quarterfinals for the first time in his career at Roland Garros before falling to Lorenzo Musetti 2-6, 6-4, 5-7, 2-6. Roddick highlighted this run as a significant milestone in the American’s development on clay courts.
Roddick Highlights Tiafoe’s Adaptation to Clay and Future Potential
Speaking on his podcast, Served with Andy Roddick, the former World No. 1 reflected on Tiafoe’s progress adjusting his game for the slower surface, which does not naturally complement his aggressive style. Roddick pointed out that Tiafoe has been working on adapting since the Monte Carlo Masters, gradually improving his clay-court play.
I think he (Tiafoe) is a better spot server on a hard court. He has never been accused of creating a huge spin profile on that backhand. It’s flat through the court when he takes it early and the court gives him some love. [He] chips the ball really well. None of those things translate to clay perfectly,
Andy Roddick said.
Despite the challenges, Roddick expressed optimism about Tiafoe’s prospects across all surfaces this season, especially on grass and hard courts where his style is more suited.

Quarterfinal result for Frances is a great springboard to the surfaces that he likes a little better. He has a lot of upside on grass that he hasn’t realized yet. And obviously, we have seen what he can do when he gets to Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York,
Roddick added.
Tiafoe’s top Grand Slam achievements include reaching the US Open semifinals twice, in 2022 and 2024, and advancing to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022, illustrating his growing consistency at major events.
Controversy Surrounds Tiafoe’s Quarterfinal Exit After Incident with Lorenzo Musetti
Lorenzo Musetti’s victory over Tiafoe was marred by a notable incident that drew attention during their French Open quarterfinal match. While serving in the second set, Musetti kicked a ball that unintentionally struck a lineswoman in the chest, earning him an unsportsmanlike conduct warning from the umpire.
The event occurred as Tiafoe was trying to regain momentum, having just broken Musetti’s serve. Tiafoe reacted by raising his hand and looking toward the chair umpire, signaling concern over Musetti’s behavior.
Musetti later spoke about the incident, expressing regret and fear about the outcome.
I was a little bit, honestly, scared, because I really didn’t want to harm nobody, of course,
Musetti stated.
Next Steps as Musetti Prepares to Face Carlos Alcaraz
Following his win against Tiafoe, Musetti will meet the defending French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in a highly anticipated semifinal clash. This matchup promises an exciting battle between two of the tournament’s rising stars, as Musetti seeks to advance further while Alcaraz aims to retain his title.
Tiafoe’s strong showing at Roland Garros, endorsed by Roddick’s hopeful analysis, signals an encouraging trajectory for the American as he continues refining his game and targeting future breakthroughs on his favored surfaces.
