Coco Gauff Climbs WTA Rankings After French Open Win, Closes Gap on No. 1 Sabalenka as Swiatek Drops Out of Top 5

The recent conclusion of the French Open 2025 has led to notable changes in the WTA rankings, with Coco Gauff rising significantly after her victory in Paris. The American defeated Aryna Sabalenka in a three-set final, retaining her career-high position at No. 2 with 8,083 points. Meanwhile, Sabalenka continues to hold the No. 1 spot, though Gauff is narrowing the gap.

Sabalenka leads the rankings with 11,533 points, maintaining her hold on the top position despite Gauff’s recent success. Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini follow in third and fourth place respectively, with 6,483 and 4,805 points. Paolini, an Italian player, remains static in her ranking despite missing out on defending her finalist points from the tournament.

Players Moving Up and Down Following the Clay Court Major

Zheng Qinwen’s strong performance, reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open, has pushed her up two positions to No. 5 with 4,668 points. Mirra Andreeva holds steady at No. 6 with 4,636 points. Iga Swiatek, who was aiming for her fourth consecutive French Open title, was stopped by Sabalenka in the semifinals, causing a fall from No. 5 to No. 7 and a point total of 4,618. This marks her exit from the top five rankings for the first time since February 2022.

New Career Highs Achieved by Several Players This Week

Amanda Anisimova secured a career-best ranking of No. 15 thanks to her fourth-round finish at the French Open. Ashlyn Krueger, another American, also reached a personal milestone, climbing to No. 33. The most dramatic rise belongs to French debutant Lois Boisson, who reached the semifinals in her first Major, upsetting top-ranked players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva before falling to Coco Gauff. Boisson surged approximately 300 spots, landing at a new career peak of No. 65.

Hailey Baptiste also recorded her best Grand Slam performance by advancing to the fourth round, improving her ranking by 12 places to No. 58. Other players achieving career-high rankings this week include Jaqueline Cristian (No. 49), Sonay Kartal (No. 50), Maya Joint (No. 51), Yuliia Starodubtseva (No. 67), Victoria Mboko (No. 91), and Robin Montgomery (No. 95).

Implications of the Rankings Shift for the Upcoming Season

Coco Gauff’s significant rise in the WTA rankings after her French Open victory signals a shift at the top of women’s tennis, as she closes the gap on Aryna Sabalenka. Iga Swiatek’s drop outside the top five adds new tension to the leaderboard and increases competition among the elite players. New career highs by rising talents hint at an evolving landscape, with several breakthrough players ready to challenge established stars in upcoming tournaments. The coming months will likely be critical in determining whether Gauff can overtake Sabalenka and how others respond to these ranking shifts.
