Laura Robson Casts Doubt on Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon 2025 Title Chances Despite Clay Success
Coco Gauff eyes Wimbledon 2025 title as Laura Robson assesses her chances amid a competitive women's singles field.

Laura Robson has shared her perspective on Coco Gauff Wimbledon 2025 title chances, expressing skepticism about the American’s likelihood of winning the tournament despite her recent triumphs on clay. Speaking ahead of the grass court season, Robson highlighted Gauff’s consistent presence at Wimbledon but questioned whether she can make a significant breakthrough this year.

Robson, the tournament director of the Queen’s Club Championships—one of the opening grass court events—commented on the women’s singles title race from her office at the HSBC Championships, a new WTA 500 event. She pointed out that while Gauff has been a regular competitor at Wimbledon, the surface has not yet brought her the kind of success she has found at other Grand Slam tournaments.

“I don’t know who is favorite in the women’s Wimbledon event. I would probably say [Aryna] Sabalenka because she’s done well there in the past, but for Coco [Gauff] it’s been a surface which hasn’t quite given her the results that the other Slams have,” Robson said (via Sky Sport).

Robson went on to describe Gauff’s Wimbledon performances as steady but lacking a standout achievement, even though the young American has reached the fourth round three times. According to Robson, this opens the door for possible surprise contenders to make their mark on the grass courts.

“Even though Gauff has made the fourth round three times, there’s not been that standout result, I’d say, so I think that leaves it quite open for some new faces to come in,” she added.

Coco Gauff, fresh off her first Grand Slam title at the French Open, has demonstrated remarkable skill and consistency on clay courts this season. She was runner-up at both the Madrid Open and Italian Open before capturing the title in Paris. Now ranked World No. 2, Gauff is preparing to transition to grass as Wimbledon 2025 approaches.

Evaluating Gauff’s Performance on Grass Leading into Wimbledon 2025

Though Coco Gauff has not yet won a grass-court title, her record on this surface remains strong, boasting 21 wins and 10 losses, a win rate of 68%. She has made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon three times—in 2019, 2021, and most recently, 2024—showing a reliable level of play at the All England Club.

Entering the 2025 grass court season, Gauff faces the challenge of defending 195 ranking points from her Berlin performance and 240 from last year’s Wimbledon results. She is currently in close competition with Aryna Sabalenka for the top spot in the rankings; Sabalenka leads with 11,553 points, while Gauff holds 8,083 points.

Wimbledon has seen unexpected champions emerge in recent years, highlighting how open and competitive the field can be. If Gauff can channel her consistent showings into a deeper run, she has the opportunity to finally claim a major grass-court breakthrough and shift the momentum in her favor at this prestigious Slam.
