Russell Westbrook has decided to decline his $3.5 million player option for the upcoming season and will test the free agent market, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. While exploring free agency is expected, there remains a strong possibility that Westbrook could return to the Denver Nuggets next season.
Performance and Role in Denver Last Season
During last season, Westbrook contributed an average of 13.3 points and 6.1 assists across 75 games, starting in 36 of them, particularly during a mid-season stretch. Playing alongside Nikola Jokic, Westbrook showed improvement by engaging in an effective two-man game, shooting 43.9% on corner three-pointers, and sharing some playmaking duties. His performance in the first round of the playoffs against the Clippers demonstrated bursts of brilliance, although his efficiency remained inconsistent throughout the season. Despite this, Westbrook’s energetic presence was highly valued by his teammates and positively influenced the team environment.
Potential Market Value and Future Outlook
Westbrook’s deal with Denver last year was a minimum contract, making his contribution extremely valuable in relation to his salary. Although it is unlikely he will receive a significantly better offer from other teams, it is understandable that he wants to explore opportunities elsewhere. Should no more attractive contracts emerge, Westbrook is expected to either re-sign with the Nuggets or join another playoff-contending team that seeks his experience and leadership.
