Coco Gauff Eyes First Grass Title at Berlin Tennis Open 2025 with Possible Sabalenka Rematch
Coco Gauff aims for her first grass title at the 2025 Berlin Tennis Open after winning the French Open.

World No. 2 Coco Gauff is set to compete in the grass season at the Berlin Tennis Open 2025, taking place from June 16 to 22. Fresh off her French Open 2025 victory, Gauff will look to build on her recent success at this WTA 500 event as she adapts to the new surface.

The tournament boasts a strong lineup, including top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, who Gauff defeated in the French Open final. Should both players advance as expected, a rematch between Gauff and Sabalenka in the Berlin final remains a distinct possibility.

Gauff Faces Challenging Path with Several Tough Opponents Before Potential Sabalenka Final

Coco Gauff enters the Berlin Tennis Open 2025 as the second seed, granting her a bye in the first round. In the second round, she will face either Daria Kasatkina or a qualifier or lucky loser. The quarterfinals could present a stern test against one of Marta Kostyuk, Paula Badosa, Emma Navarro, or Eva Lys. Notably, Gauff experienced a loss to Badosa earlier this year at the Australian Open.

Win or lose, Emma Navarro has also posed difficulties for Gauff in the past, having eliminated her at Wimbledon and the US Open in recent seasons. Navarro has challenged Gauff on several occasions, while Kostyuk has been involved in tight matches against her as well.

If Gauff progresses further, potential semifinal opponents include Mirra Andreeva, defending champion Jessica Pegula, or Amanda Anisimova. Aryna Sabalenka could await in the final, although if Sabalenka falls earlier, players such as Madison Keys, Zheng Qinwen, or Elena Rybakina might take her place in the title match.

Crucially, Gauff has yet to reach a grass-court final, making this tournament a key opportunity given her current form and previous solid showings in Berlin.

Gauff’s Past Berlin Performances Highlight Consistency and Room for Growth

Berlin 2025 marks Coco Gauff’s fourth appearance at this tournament. She reached the semifinals on her debut in 2022 before falling to Ons Jabeur, and repeated the achievement last year, when she lost to Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. These consistent semifinal runs indicate her comfort on the Berlin courts, but she seeks to move beyond this stage for the first time.

The Berlin Tennis Open is a WTA 500 event, awarding 500 ranking points to the champion and 325 to the finalist. Since Gauff already earned semifinal points last year, she will need to advance further to improve her current ranking total of 8,083 points. Exiting before the semifinals will reduce her tally, as the semifinal finish yields 195 points.

A title victory here could contribute 305 ranking points to Gauff’s total, while a runner-up finish would add 130 points. These potential gains underline the importance of the Berlin Tennis Open for Gauff’s standing as she navigates the grass season.

Transitioning from Clay to Grass, Gauff Seeks to Maintain Momentum

The move from the slow clay courts of Paris to the fast grass surfaces of Berlin presents regular adjustment challenges. Nevertheless, Gauff aims to carry forward the confidence and peak performance that propelled her to the French Open crown. Her objective is to harness this momentum and secure her maiden grass-court title amid a competitive field.

Given her steady rise and recent achievements, expectations are high that Gauff will contend strongly for the Berlin Tennis Open 2025 crown, potentially culminating in a highly anticipated final against Aryna Sabalenka.
