The FIA has delivered its verdict regarding the investigation into Mercedes driver George Russell following an incident at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix. After scrutiny during Friday’s practice sessions at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Russell received only a formal warning and avoided any further penalty, a crucial development for the British driver ahead of the race weekend.
During the second free practice session, Russell set the fastest time but was called to the stewards over a potential breach of Article 12.2.1i of the International Sporting Code and failure to comply with specific instructions from the Race Director that were detailed in the event notes. Officials reviewed video footage, including onboard camera evidence, alongside statements from Russell and a Mercedes team representative before reaching their decision.
Details of Russell’s Incident and FIA’s Deliberation
Russell explained his actions to the stewards, stating that after a tire change, he lost control of the rear of his car at Turn 13. To avoid hitting the wall, he left the track to the inside of the corner on Turn 14, cutting across the orange kerb which was a clear violation of the race director’s instructions.
He said that he was focused on keeping the car off the wall and cut the orange line on the exit of turn 14. He said that he immediately realised that in so doing he had not complied with the instruction and apologised. No other cars were affected and the rejoining was not unsafe.

Considering these circumstances and the absence of any danger to other drivers, the stewards chose not to impose any penalty beyond issuing a warning. This decision was made to align with previous rulings for similar infringements during free practice sessions at the same venue.
How Russell’s Warning Impacts Mercedes and His Championship Prospects
The race director had outlined strict rules for all drivers before the weekend’s sessions, especially regarding adherence to track limits and the escape road at Turn 14. Russell’s breach of the outlined guidelines and Article 12.2.1i put him under official review, but the warning allows him to continue without setback for the moment.
Russell’s performance in practice, topping the timesheets in FP2, provided a positive note for Mercedes, who currently sit third in the constructors‘ championship. They trail Ferrari by just six points as the title fight intensifies. For Russell, every point is vital, particularly as his contract renewal remains pending with team principal Toto Wolff expected to make key decisions shortly.
This warning from the FIA comes as a welcome reprieve for Russell, preserving his strong position during a critical phase of the 2025 F1 campaign and the Canadian GP weekend where momentum is essential.
