Mikko Rantanen‘s NHL season included multiple moves, beginning with his trade from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes on January 24. With free agency approaching on July 1, Colorado chose to trade him rather than risk losing him without compensation. After appearing in 13 games for Carolina, the Hurricanes were unable to secure a long-term contract, prompting a subsequent trade to the Dallas Stars in March. Dallas then signed Rantanen to an eight-year deal worth $96 million, marking a significant commitment to the forward.
Season Performance and Playoff Impact for Dallas
Throughout the regular season, Rantanen represented three teams: starting with Colorado, briefly with Carolina, and finishing with Dallas. His combined totals were impressive, with 32 goals and 56 assists for 88 points, ranking him among the NHL’s top 20 scorers. In the playoffs, he elevated his game, contributing 9 goals and 13 assists over 18 contests. Notably, Rantanen recorded two hat tricks—one against his former team Colorado in a decisive Game 7, and another in Game 1 versus Winnipeg. His average ice time exceeded 20 minutes per game, reflecting his central role in Dallas’ postseason push.
Rantanen’s Personal Reflection on a Rapid Series of Trades
Describing the whirlwind nature of his season, Mikko Rantanen acknowledged the unexpected experience of being traded twice within six weeks. He reflected on his surprise at the initial trade from Colorado but expressed satisfaction with how the changes have unfolded.

“It was the first time I’ve been traded from Colorado and it happened quick…,” Rantanen said, via NHL.com. “So it’s been something that I never thought I would fully experience”
His short time with Carolina was marked by uncertainty over a permanent deal. Even though he appreciated his experience in Carolina, he indicated that Dallas felt like a better organizational and personal fit. Rantanen involved those close to him in the decision-making process.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about it with myself and my camp and (my girlfriend) Susanna and everything,” Rantanen said in March. “Just the fit I feel like everywhere, I think that was what the decision was.”
