Cowboys Coach Denies Rumors, Defends Caleb Williams’ Film Study During Troubled Chicago Bears Rookie Season
Caleb Williams navigates a challenging rookie season with the Bears, balancing expectations and personal growth in Chicago.

Matt Eberflus, recently returned to the Dallas Cowboys as defensive coordinator, addressed rumors surrounding Caleb Williams‘ Chicago Bears rookie season development and defended the level of film study provided to the young quarterback. After being dismissed as Chicago’s head coach following the 2023 season, Eberflus responded to claims about Williams’ preparation during a challenging first year in the NFL.

During his two-year tenure with the Bears, Eberflus oversaw a turbulent 2024 season that included the struggles of No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams. Reports surfaced suggesting Williams had to rely heavily on solo film study, reportedly lacking strong coaching support from Eberflus and offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. Waldron was hired specifically to help develop Williams but was fired before the end of the season, adding to speculation about the rookie’s development environment.

In a conversation with Dallas Cowboys reporters Ed Werder and Matt Mosley, Eberflus offered a straightforward rebuttal. He stated,

“I would say this. In the development of the quarterback position – and, really, all positions at my time with the Bears – we’ve always had daily coached film sessions,”

continuing,

“That was all through the entire year. That’s what I observed and that’s where it was.”

Werder also referenced Eberflus’ connection with renowned Toledo coach Nick Saban, known for his hands-on quarterback coaching style. Eberflus acknowledged this comparison but kept his remarks brief:

“That’s really all I have to say about it. That’s what it is.”

Caleb Williams’ rookie season was further complicated by off-field distractions. An excerpt from ESPN’s Seth Wickersham’s book American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback claimed Williams and his father allegedly attempted to avoid being chosen first overall by the Bears in the 2024 NFL Draft—though Williams was ultimately selected by Chicago. During a minicamp press conference, Williams expressed gratitude to play for the Bears, but the lengthy statement did little to ease ongoing fan concerns.

Eberflus appears focused on moving beyond his challenging Chicago experience as he returns to Dallas. He welcomed the opportunity to work with quarterback Dak Prescott, who influenced Eberflus’ decision to rejoin the Cowboys. Transitioning back to a defensive coordinator role suits Eberflus’ expertise better than the multifaceted responsibilities he held as a head coach. Since his arrival, he has also provided guidance to first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer, suggesting a collaborative environment ahead.

For Eberflus, this new chapter represents a chance to leave behind the difficulties of his Chicago Bears tenure and start fresh in a familiar setting with a stronger quarterback situation.
