Mark Vientos Eyes Mets Comeback: Can He Reclaim Third Base and Ignite His Power Bat?
Mark Vientos eyes a comeback with the Mets amid fierce third base competition against Brett Baty for 2024 season.

The New York Mets are cautiously optimistic as Mark Vientos aims for a comeback following a hamstring injury that sidelined him on June 3. Vientos is beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse to regain his form and secure a spot back on the Mets’ roster, focusing on his role at third base and as a designated hitter.

A Season Marked by Promise and Setbacks

Vientos entered the season with high expectations after a strong 2024 performance, in which he hit 27 home runs and drove in 71 RBIs. This year, however, he has struggled to replicate that success. Over 53 games, Vientos has managed a .230 batting average with a .678 OPS. His offensive issues have been compounded by defensive challenges, where his metrics rank him near the bottom among major league third basemen.

Intense Competition for Third Base Role

The Mets have a crowded race for the third base position, notably with Brett Baty staking his claim. Baty’s defense has stood out, ranking sixth in Outs Above Average, giving him an advantage defensively over Vientos. Yet, Baty’s recent decline in offensive production could open the door for Vientos to retake the position if he returns to his previous hitting caliber.

Mets’ Roster Moves and Strategic Considerations

As Vientos nears his return, the Mets must weigh their roster options carefully. With Jesse Winker still rehabbing an oblique strain, Vientos may split time between third base and designated hitter duties. Meanwhile, prospect Ronny Mauricio, who filled in during Vientos’ absence, has yet to solidify his place in the majors. Additional decisions involving players like Luisangel Acuna and Jared Young could also reshape the roster moving forward.

The Road Ahead for Vientos and the Mets

Mark Vientos’ anticipated return carries significant weight for both his personal career and the Mets’ season prospects. His ability to regain form at the plate and in the field could be a key factor in the team’s success during the remaining games. The upcoming weeks will reveal whether Vientos can reclaim third base and contribute to the Mets’ push for a strong finish.
