Alex Cora Confirms Rafael Devers Will Stay in Designated Hitter Role for Rest of Season
Rafael Devers remains the designated hitter for the Red Sox, as manager Alex Cora supports this decision.

Rafael Devers will continue in the designated hitter role for the Boston Red Sox throughout the remainder of the season, according to manager Alex Cora. This decision settles ongoing questions about Devers’ defensive positioning and his role within the team’s lineup.

Manager Alex Cora Addresses Devers’ Defensive Role

Despite Devers taking shortstop reps during pregame routines, Cora emphasized that these are primarily to keep him active rather than preparing for an infield return. The Red Sox currently have their corners staffed with Marcelo Mayer at third base and Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez sharing time at first base, reducing the need for Devers in the field.

“We talk (about taking reps on defense), but he’s my DH,”

Cora told reporters on Saturday, per Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. When asked if Devers would remain in the designated hitter position for the rest of the season, Cora replied, “Yes.”

Team Dynamics and Upcoming Roster Considerations

Boston appears settled with their infield arrangement, but questions remain about how the team will manage outfield positions. The expected return of Wilyer Abreu adds complexity, especially alongside other outfielders such as Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Roman Anthony. This creates a crowded situation that the Red Sox will have to navigate.

Devers’ role as the designated hitter will continue to be a focal point, reflecting both the team’s current strategy and the interests of fans and analysts monitoring the roster.
