Steven Adams has agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets, securing his place on the team ahead of the upcoming free agency period. This deal comes after Adams’ previous two-year contract worth $25.2 million, which began with the Memphis Grizzlies, was set to expire.
The agreement ensures that Adams will continue to play alongside rising star Alperen Şengün for the Rockets, reinforcing the team’s frontcourt as it aims to build on recent improvements under head coach Ime Udoka.
Adams’ Role and Contributions During the 2024-25 Season
After some initial uncertainty during the first two months of the 2024-25 season, Adams found a consistent role off the bench. He appeared in 58 regular-season games, averaging 3.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in approximately 13.7 minutes per game. Notably, he led the league in offensive rebound percentage, grabbing 18.1% of his team’s offensive boards among players with at least 50 games played.
Throughout the Rockets’ seven-game playoff run, Adams increased his playing time to more than 22 minutes per game, contributing 5.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per contest. His steady presence added depth and experience to a youthful Rockets roster making significant progress last season.
Looking Ahead: Adams’ Expected Impact in Houston’s Future
At nearly 32 years old and several years removed from knee surgery, Adams is poised to continue providing valuable veteran leadership and on-court stability. His extension signals confidence from both the Rockets’ management and coaching staff in his ability to support the team’s growth. With other key players and free agency rumors swirling around Houston, Adams’ commitment offers a foundation as the franchise continues its rebuild.
