Christopher Bell Reflects on Mexico City Runner-Up Finish: “It Was on Me,” Not the Car Pace

Christopher Bell delivered a solid performance at the Mexico City race on Sunday, finishing second behind Shane van Gisbergen, in a result that left the Joe Gibbs Racing driver deep in reflection. Despite the strong showing, Bell expressed disappointment over missing out on a fourth victory this season.

Bell acknowledged van Gisbergen’s skill in securing the win and noted that his own performance, along with that of his teammate Ty Gibbs, influenced the outcome. Bell completed the race with his third runner-up finish of the year and said it was ultimately his responsibility to improve and keep up with the competition rather than any deficiency in the car.

So, both days, in the Xfinity car (in Saturday’s race) I was a third place car. Today, I felt like I was a third place car. I think more than anything it was just me, I need to do a little bit more homework and figure out where I can be better to keep up with these guys.

This strong string of performances—including three wins, three second-place finishes, and a third-place showing in just 16 races—would satisfy most drivers. However, Bell remains focused on self-improvement, climbing to third place in the standings after the event and determined to elevate his efforts.

The Joe Gibbs Racing group brought an amazing Mobil 1 Camry and I can’t really say that it was my car that was lacking, I think it was on me this weekend,

Bell said, reflecting on his performance despite having a car capable of winning.

Giving Credit to Van Gisbergen’s Performance

Although Bell felt the disappointment of finishing second, he praised Shane van Gisbergen for his drive and performance. SVG had faced challenges throughout the season, entering the weekend ranked 33rd in the Cup standings, but his victory in Mexico City secured him a spot in the upcoming playoffs.

Bell emphasized the pressure van Gisbergen faces in road course races and acknowledged the high standards set.

Obviously, there’s a lot of pressure on him to come out here and perform well in these road course races and he sets the bar for us.

Looking ahead, Bell and the Joe Gibbs Racing team will return to the United States to compete at next weekend’s race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, preparing to build on their strong season thus far.
