Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global earned his first career oval win at the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 held at World Wide Technology Raceway, driving his #27 Siemens Honda to a narrow 0.5398-second victory over Pato O’Ward in the #5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. This triumph marks Kirkwood’s third overall IndyCar victory and highlights his ability to seize opportunities during a chaotic race filled with multiple restarts.
The event featured a series of unpredictable moments, including a battle for the lead between Pato O’Ward and Conor Daly after the initial restart. Daly challenged O’Ward for the front spot, overtaking him on Lap 160, while Kirkwood remained within the top 10 for much of the race. A strong pit stop by Kirkwood on Lap 195 allowed him to gain critical track positions as the race progressed.
Key Moments Define a Race Full of Strategic Challenges
A caution period was sparked when David Malukas lightly touched the wall, prompting a field reset. Scott Dixon, who had yet to pit at that stage, inherited the lead by employing an early fuel-saving strategy. However, Dixon had to conserve fuel to finish, which ultimately slowed his pace compared to competitors behind him.
During the second restart, O’Ward held second place while Kirkwood sat closely behind in third. A delayed reaction by O’Ward enabled Kirkwood to overtake him with 55 laps remaining. Subsequently, Kirkwood executed an undercut on the race leader to assume control and maintain the lead until the finish. Reflecting on how the race restarts influenced his triumph, Kirkwood credited those moments for helping him secure his first oval victory.

“The starts and the restarts were big, like that was absolutely huge. We were not too happy with the car yesterday and we had got some help from the teammates, made the car really good and came home with a win on track with amazing car. In the beginning I really didn’t think we had it but as it got dark and it cooled down, the Honda, this Andretti Global #27 just came alive,” said Kirkwood. —Kyle Kirkwood, Andretti Global driver
Currently, Kirkwood sits third in the IndyCar Drivers’ standings with 260 points, demonstrating consistent performance throughout the season.
Kyle Kirkwood Aims to Redefine His Reputation Beyond Street Circuits
Despite previously winning four races, Kyle Kirkwood had not achieved success on oval tracks until this event. When questioned about the significance of this win by IndyCar Pitlane reporter Georgia Henneberry, Kirkwood emphasized the greater personal value of the oval victory compared to his street course wins.
“Way more than a street course, I am not gonna lie. An oval win and a course win is what I have wanted. I didn’t want people to think of me as just the street course guy.” —Kyle Kirkwood, Andretti Global driver
This victory at World Wide Technology Raceway also marked back-to-back wins for Kirkwood, following his previous triumph in Detroit. Over the current season, only Kirkwood and Alex Palou have reached the top step of the podium, underscoring the competitiveness of the field.
Importance of the Win and Future Implications
Kyle Kirkwood’s first career oval win is a significant milestone that broadens his credentials in IndyCar racing, dispelling the perception that his skills are limited to street courses. This success in a demanding and unpredictable race setting reflects his adaptability and resilience under pressure. As the season continues, Kirkwood’s form and strategic racing could make him a strong contender for the championship title, while the battle among drivers like Pato O’Ward, Scott Dixon, and Alex Palou promises intense competition ahead.
