Taylor Fritz Reveals Surprising Truth About His Close Tennis Bond with Tommy Paul After Olympic Medal Win
Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul: a strong friendship and dynamic duo in American tennis, celebrated for their Olympic bronze medal.

Taylor Fritz has shown signs of a resurgence in American tennis by securing a significant win at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart over the weekend. After struggling during the clay-court season, including an early exit at the French Open, Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev to add another trophy to his collection. His recent victory signals renewed momentum as he eyes a deeper run at Wimbledon this year, where he fell to Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals last season. Currently the top-ranked American male player, Fritz is now challenged closely by fellow countryman Tommy Paul in the ATP rankings. Last August, the duo earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, reflecting their growing partnership.

An Insight into Fritz and Paul’s Unique Partnership

Known for their contrasting playing styles, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul form a dynamic combination, especially in doubles competitions. Their synergy on the court has made them a promising duo likely to team up again in future tournaments. Fritz, speaking on the Tennis Insider Club podcast, shared the depth of his friendship and respect for Paul, which has developed over many years.

He said:

“I think it’s really cool that we were able to do it together. Like, I grew up with Tommy. We’ve known each other since we were, like, 14 years old, so I used to, like, he’s one of my best friends.”

“So I think that experience together was really cool. I think the whole Olympic experience was awesome.”

Fritz also reflected on his initial hesitance to attend the Olympics amid the COVID-19 restrictions, expressing how the atmosphere in Tokyo was unlike typical Games. He recalled how the usual vibrancy in the Olympic Village was absent, describing it as a very isolated experience where players couldn’t interact as freely.

“That was my first time going. I had opted out of the last two. Rio, I didn’t really want to go. And then I was super excited to go to Tokyo. And then when everything came in with, like, all the COVID everything.. I was like, I don’t want this to be my first Olympic experience. It’s just not going to be, like.. correct.”

“Like COVID. No one can be around anyone else. Like, the village was just going to not be like the village. So it was like, I just, I just didn’t want to do that.”

Despite this, Fritz and Paul chose to embrace the more challenging environment, opting for the Olympic Village experience rather than staying in the nicer hotel assigned to most of the U.S. tennis players.

“It’s the first time the US team, like the whole team, all the tennis players, were at like a really nice hotel, they had like a really nice hotel booked for us.”

“Tommy and I were like, nah we’re in the village, we’re grinding it out, like sharing, you know, sharing, like, the smallest. Jerome also grinded it out with us. Everyone else came for like a day and then went to the hotel. We were committed to it.”

On the intensity of winning the Olympic medal, Fritz recalled a tense moment during the bronze medal match.

“And then, yeah, I don’t think I really realised how important winning a medal was to me until I was serving for the match in the Bronze match at, like, 40-15. That’s when it was like, oh, my God, like, I’m actually like tight. It got back to Deuce, we were down a couple of break points, like, it was a little scary.”

Tommy Paul’s Climb in the ATP Rankings Challenges Fritz’s No. 1 Standing

Tommy Paul has been making significant strides in his career, highlighted by a strong showing at this year’s French Open, where he reached the quarter-finals for the first time. Although he was defeated by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, the experience propelled Paul into the top 10 in the ATP rankings for the first time. Currently ranked eighth, Paul is closing in on Fritz, who holds the fourth spot following his Stuttgart title.

The rivalry and camaraderie between Fritz and Paul bring renewed hope for American men’s tennis, which has faced challenges in recent years. On the women’s side, players like Coco Gauff and Madison Keys have enjoyed major success in 2024, further inspiring the men’s circuit to regain its competitive edge on the world stage.
