Dana White Warns Jon Jones: Fight Tom Aspinall or UFC Will Move On Within Weeks
Jon Jones' refusal to fight Tom Aspinall stirs frustration among UFC officials and fans alike. What's next for the heavyweight champ?

UFC President Dana White has issued a stern message regarding Jon Jones refusal to fight Tom Aspinall, emphasizing that Jones must decide soon or the organization will proceed without him. The heavyweight champion, Jones, who claimed the belt by defeating Ciryl Gane in 2023 and successfully defended it against Stipe Miocic, faces increasing pressure to face interim champion Aspinall, who is ready for a title shot.

Current Status of the Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall Title Dispute

Jon Jones has thus far avoided accepting a bout with Tom Aspinall, delaying a showdown that many expected to headline a major UFC event during International Fight Week on June 28. Aspinall, as the interim heavyweight champion, is overdue for a title fight, putting the heavyweight division’s championship clarity in question. Jones’s reluctance has frustrated many within the UFC, as well as fans and fighters alike, who see the situation as undermining the prestige of the belt.

Dana White Addresses Jones’s Hesitation and Negotiations

During an appearance on The Jim Rome Show, Dana White shed light on the ongoing negotiations and Jones’s stance. White remarked,

“Jon Jones has been an interesting human being to deal with since he got here … he’s never been afraid to fight anybody.”

Despite this comment, Jones’s hesitation with Aspinall is causing friction behind the scenes.

There were reports suggesting that Jones demanded $30 million to accept the fight against Aspinall—a notable sum in mixed martial arts, though comparable to boxing purses such as those earned by Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder in their 2020 rematch in Las Vegas. The UFC has reportedly not rejected the financial terms outright, but White indicated patience is running thin.

“We’ll see how this thing plays out in the next couple of weeks, but if we can’t get this done, we’ll move on — quickly. We’ll have answers in the next couple weeks.”

Potential Outcomes if Jones Continues to Refuse Aspinall

If Jon Jones declines to face Tom Aspinall soon, UFC plans to move forward without him. Jones could still engage in fights within the Octagon, possibly against notable contenders like Alex Pereira, but it remains uncertain whether he would retain the heavyweight title during such bouts. The organization might strip Jones of the championship and elevate Aspinall to undisputed champion status. An alternative for the interim champion would be a matchup with Ciryl Gane, serving as a backup plan for the heavyweight title lineage.

The unresolved tension over the heavyweight title has garnered criticism from many UFC veterans who are weary of Jones’s protracted negotiations and perceived avoidance of Aspinall. The outcome of the current impasse carries substantial weight for the division’s future and the sport’s credibility.
