Lando Norris has become a serious contender for the Formula 1 world championship in 2025, but his inconsistent performances threaten to derail his title ambitions. Martin Brundle, an experienced F1 presenter, has urged the British driver to bring his best effort to every race, warning that without this level of consistency, Norris’s championship hopes could fade quickly.
The 25-year-old McLaren driver has shown moments of brilliance but often struggles with self-criticism after making costly errors. This was evident at the Canadian Grand Prix when Norris collided with his teammate, Oscar Piastri, forcing an early retirement. While Norris swiftly took responsibility for the crash, the mistake proved damaging, especially as Piastri, who leads the championship, finished fourth and secured valuable points.
Brundle Urges Norris to Emulate Verstappen’s Consistency
Martin Brundle emphasized the importance of consistent high-level performance for Norris if he aims to win the championship.
“Lando won’t win a world championship unless he can stop these weekends happening. It’s as simple as that. He’s got to bring his A-game pretty much all the time, like Max [Verstappen] does,”
Brundle said in a candid assessment.
Brundle highlighted that while Norris had some outstanding performances, his erratic races prevent him from challenging his teammate effectively. Meanwhile, Verstappen’s unyielding focus and steadiness across races set a high standard that Norris must match if he wants to compete at the very top.
In contrast, Brundle praised Oscar Piastri for his reliability and stronger racecraft this season.

“Oscar’s much more solid in his delivery week in, week out, much more consistent,”
Brundle added, underscoring Piastri’s five race wins compared to Norris’s two, reflecting Piastri’s edge in the championship battle.
Norris Remains in Contention Despite Setbacks
Despite Norris’s fluctuations in form, the season is far from over, with several races remaining. After ten rounds, Piastri holds the championship lead, followed by Norris, though Max Verstappen sits close behind in third place. Norris’s unpredictable results have raised questions about his ability to surpass Piastri, but Brundle maintains that Norris still has a fighting chance.
Brundle expressed his confusion over Norris’s varying performances, noting the sharp contrast between his dominant and flawed weekends.
“I find it really confusing, those two different levels of performance. He needs to park one and deliver the other one more often, but there’s a long way to go. It doesn’t mean he’s out of the championship at all,”
Brundle explained.
The presenter pointed out a significant decline in Norris’s points since the season opener in Melbourne, where he began strongly.
“But when you look at the turnaround in points from the advantage he came away from Melbourne with, to what he’s got now, it’s a 45-point swing in that time,”
Brundle noted, highlighting the growing gap between Norris and Piastri in the standings.
Pressure Mounts Ahead of Remaining Races
With 14 races left in the season, Norris faces mounting pressure to eliminate mistakes and consistently perform at his peak to keep pace with Piastri. McLaren appears committed to allowing both drivers to compete fully despite recent collisions, but Norris cannot afford another misstep, especially one involving his teammate.
The importance of maintaining team harmony while pushing for the championship adds complexity to the title chase. Norris’s ability to rise to this challenge will be crucial as McLaren fans hope to see both drivers battling fiercely but fairly for the top spot. The coming months will be critical for Norris to prove he can sustain the level of performance required to compete for the world championship.
