Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, has faced significant challenges adapting to Ferrari’s difficulties in Italy since joining the team earlier this year. Despite high hopes of restoring Ferrari’s success, Hamilton has struggled to compete at the front, prompting former F1 champion Nico Rosberg to suggest that Ferrari’s location and internal dynamics could be underlying factors. Rosberg also indicated that Ferrari might open a new base in the UK to help address these issues.
Lewis Hamilton’s Struggles Amid Ferrari’s Challenges in Italy
Hamilton’s move to Scuderia Ferrari marked the fulfillment of a long-held ambition when he switched from Mercedes earlier in the season. However, the 40-year-old has encountered persistent difficulties, failing to contend seriously for race victories except for a sprint race win in China. His debut season at Maranello has been marred by ongoing team problems, which Hamilton has largely refrained from publicly discussing after the Canadian Grand Prix.
Most Formula 1 teams operate entirely from the UK, benefitting from a centralized location near the sport’s major technology and engineering hubs. Ferrari remains an exception with its headquarters firmly based in Maranello, Italy. Rosberg believes that this geographical choice places Ferrari at a disadvantage compared to British-based teams, especially Mercedes, where Hamilton previously enjoyed seamless communication and swift decision-making support from Toto Wolff.
Rosberg explained the contrast:
“I have seen a little of things within Ferrari, and it is seen that the level of excellence they have achieved is not comparable to that of the British teams, and especially that of a team like Mercedes, in many areas. The fact that it is in Italy makes everything much more difficult. In Mercedes, every time Lewis had a problem he immediately went to Toto Wolff, who he would decide immediately. In Ferrari, however, many decide and even Lewis does not know what to do. It’s all a little ‘difficult.’”

Potential Ferrari Base in the UK to Improve Operations
While Ferrari’s roots in Maranello run deep, the evolving motorsport landscape and concentration of expertise in the UK make a strong case for the team to establish a satellite facility there. Most F1 teams tap into the UK’s talent pool and technological resources, which Ferrari is at risk of missing out on by staying solely in Italy.
Rosberg revealed he had heard rumors about Ferrari planning to open a UK branch, acknowledging both the potential benefits and the complications it could bring.
“I heard an indiscretion about Ferrari who is considering opening a branch in the UK, because that is the motorsport valley. The problem would be the right communication. This base has to communicate excellently with headquarters, and perhaps this is not possible.”

Such a move could help improve communication for drivers like Hamilton, who would find a UK base more accessible. However, it could also introduce new challenges by splitting the team’s efforts across locations that must coordinate closely to maintain efficiency.
Implications for Ferrari’s Future and Hamilton’s Campaign
Ferrari currently faces a complex situation, with internal inefficiencies and the challenge of competition from teams benefiting from more streamlined operations in Britain. Opening a UK office might ease some issues but also risks further complicating coordination. Hamilton’s difficulties adapting to Ferrari’s Italy challenges highlight how critical clear communication and unified team support are in Formula 1’s high-pressure environment.
As Hamilton and Ferrari work to overcome their disappointing results this season, the team may pursue structural changes to regain competitiveness. Continued adjustments and strategic decisions, both technical and organizational, could determine whether Ferrari returns to fighting for top positions and if Hamilton can fulfill expectations with the iconic Italian team.
