Pete Alonso’s Mets Future Uncertain as Lindor Hints at Likely Opt-Out Despite Stellar Season
Pete Alonso's impressive 2025 season raises speculation about a Mets contract extension amid potential free agency.

In the offseason, the New York Mets signed Pete Alonso to a two-year contract worth $54 million. The agreement promises Alonso $30 million in the first year, after which he holds the option to opt out and enter free agency. During the 2025 season, Alonso’s impressive performance has strengthened his case for a contract extension with the team. Through 72 games and 270 plate appearances, he is batting .293 and has hit 17 home runs along with 63 RBIs, showcasing his offensive value to the Mets.

Francisco Lindor’s Perspective on Alonso’s Contract Outlook

On a recent episode of The Show, host Joel Sherman asked Mets star Francisco Lindor about Alonso’s future with the team. Lindor indicated that, given Alonso’s outstanding season, it seems increasingly likely that he will opt out of his current deal. He praised Alonso’s importance to the team, noting how much Alonso’s presence improves the lineup and overall team performance.

“I mean, he’s pretty likely to opt out at this point with the year that he’s having,” Lindor said (33:05 onwards). “How much does he mean to this team? He means a lot to us. I was happy he came back—he makes our team better. He lengthens our lineup. The way he’s playing this year is incredible.

“Super happy for him. And throughout the negotiations, you know, it’s one of those where the team gave what they felt was the best effort they could give. And Pete, in all his rights, wanted to make sure he made the best decision for himself and his family.”

Lindor emphasized that Alonso has every right to prioritize what is best for him and his family in making contract decisions, just as any player would.

Alonso Reflects on the Possibility of a Lifelong Mets Career

Pete Alonso has spent his entire professional career with the New York Mets, and last offseason he nearly signed elsewhere before returning to the team. Now that his performance in 2025 is strong, the Mets may consider offering him an extension that could keep him in New York for years to come.

Alonso has expressed that staying with one team for his whole career would be a special experience, although he acknowledges that financial considerations play a key role in such decisions.

“That could be awesome. It’s really rare for a guy to spend his whole career with one team — I mean, I’ve thought about it, for sure,” Alonso said via the New York Post. “But the business side of things has to work out for that. I love playing here. It’s awesome. I hope that the business side works out to be that way.”

While Alonso values the idea of remaining with the Mets, he is also realistic about the possibility of leaving if a more lucrative offer arises from another team during free agency.

The Stakes for the Mets and Alonso Moving Forward

As Alonso continues to deliver outstanding results in the 2025 season, the New York Mets face a critical decision on whether to secure a contract extension or risk losing one of their star players to free agency. Alonso’s ability to bolster the lineup and his connection to the team make him a valuable asset, but his personal and financial goals remain a priority. The outcome of these negotiations will shape not only Alonso’s future but also the Mets’ competitive prospects in the coming seasons.
