Rafael Devers Breaks Silence on Controversial Trade and Position Drama After Leaving Red Sox
Rafael Devers addresses trade controversies, embracing a new role with the Giants after a tumultuous exit from Boston.

Rafael Devers’ departure from the Boston Red Sox unfolded amid disputes over his playing position and a strained relationship with the organization, culminating in his trade to the San Francisco Giants. During his introductory press conference with his new team, Devers addressed the controversies surrounding his Boston exit while expressing gratitude and optimism about his future in San Francisco.

Devers Reflects on His Time with the Red Sox and New Beginning

The breakdown in Devers’ relationship with Boston involved off-field disagreements and clashes over his role on the field. Despite being a three-time All-Star, Devers resisted position changes suggested by the Red Sox, including shifts to designated hitter after the acquisition of Alex Bregman and to first base following an injury to Triston Casas. These refusals contributed to tensions with the team’s management and partly led to his trade.

At his first press event as a Giant, Devers began by acknowledging the Red Sox’s role in his career development, thanking the organization for signing him at age 16 and allowing him to grow into a major league player. He also expressed excitement about joining the Giants and being able to represent Latin America while mentioning the opportunity to meet club president Barry Bonds.

First of all, I want to thank the Boston Red Sox organization for signing me at 16 and giving me the opportunity to become a big leaguer. I’m happy to be here with the San Francisco Giants, represent Latin America, and meet Barry Bonds.

When pressed about what went wrong in Boston, Devers avoided detailing the issues, choosing instead to focus on moving forward. He maintained,

I’m moving forward from the situation in Boston.

Later, when questioned again, he reiterated,

That is in the past. I’m looking forward. I really don’t want to talk about it.

Position Flexibility and Role Expectations in San Francisco

Unlike his unwillingness to change roles in Boston, Devers conveyed a more adaptable approach with the Giants. He committed to giving his full effort regardless of where the team assigns him on the field. The Giants’ leadership, including president of baseball operations Buster Posey and manager Bob Melvin, will oversee his positioning decisions.

I’m here to give my 100%. I don’t put in any ‘buts,’

Devers said. He added,

I am here to play wherever they want me to play.

With gold glove third baseman Matt Chapman firmly in place, manager Melvin confirmed that Devers will divide his playing time between first base and designated hitter duties, a plan that Devers appeared to welcome.

Upcoming Matchup and Devers’ Focus on Competition

Devers is set to face his former Red Sox teammates for the first time since the trade at Oracle Park later this week. While his exact position in that series remains uncertain, Devers expressed determination to contribute fully and help the Giants win. His positive demeanor during media interactions suggested eagerness to start a new chapter.

I will give my 100% and try to win the series.
