This offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders acquired quarterback Geno Smith by trading a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Seattle Seahawks. Since the trade, Smith has made a strong impression on his new team, showcasing his confidence and competitive spirit during the minicamp.
On June 17, Raiders center Jackson Powers-Johnson shared his observations about Smith’s early impact on ‘The Rush Podcast.’ Powers-Johnson highlighted how Smith has embraced his new environment, noting that the quarterback enjoys himself and battles fiercely in practice. Smith’s competitive nature was particularly evident through his interactions with star defensive player Maxx Crosby.
“Oh he’s [Geno Smith] slinging that thing [the football]. And, he’s having fun and he’s competing. He’s jawing off with Maxx [Crosby], it’s so fun. It’s good. It’s good. He’s gotten definitely comfortable with the team.” —Jackson Powers-Johnson, Center
Smith’s arrival is expected to significantly elevate the Raiders’ offensive performance in 2025. Compared to last season’s quarterbacks Gardner Minshew, Desmond Ridder, and Aidan O’Connell, who all struggled to lead the team effectively, Smith represents a notable upgrade at the position. The team’s offensive outlook is further boosted by the addition of rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft from Boise State. Tight end Brock Bowers also remains one of the league’s top talents, raising expectations for the Raiders’ attacking capabilities.
2025 Season Performance and Team Outlook
Despite these roster improvements, Sportskeeda’s Playoff Predictor Tool projects the Raiders to face continued challenges in the 2025 season. After ending 2024 with a 4-13 record, the Raiders are forecast to finish with the same 4-13 record in 2025, placing last in the AFC West division. This outcome means the team would miss out on the playoffs once again.
Although postseason success remains elusive, the Raiders’ results would secure them the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, offering another opportunity to build a stronger squad. The progress shown by Smith at minicamp, combined with the additions of Jeanty and Bowers, leaves fans hopeful for more consistent competitiveness and growth moving forward.
