James Johnson, a top defensive lineman, strengthens ties with Texas during his official visit this weekend.

James Johnson, a highly-rated four-star defensive lineman and the top prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, has intensified his recruitment by scheduling an official visit to the University of Texas this weekend. His commitment to the Longhorns remains a significant focus as he shifts his visit plans, drawing both excitement and criticism from fans during this critical recruiting period.

Changing Visit Plans Elevate Texas’ Recruiting Efforts

Originally, Johnson planned to visit Syracuse on June 20 but altered his itinerary to prioritize Texas instead. This marks another change after he canceled a May 30 visit to Syracuse in favor of Georgia. His visit to Texas is highly anticipated as the Longhorns look to strengthen their defensive lineup with his addition.

The announcement triggered mixed reactions from fans on social media, demonstrating the passion surrounding his ultimate decision. Some expressed doubts about Texas’ defensive capabilities and recruiting skills, while others welcomed the prospect of Johnson joining the Longhorns.

“Texas has a horrible defense I wouldn’t do it,” one wrote.

“Most desperate team in CFB proving it to the rest of the country,” one wrote.

“Bad decision young man,” a netizen wrote.

“Donors might go bankrupt soon with as much money they’re giving these kids to come on visits and commit. Bc we all know Sark can’t recruit defense,” one added.

Despite the backlash, many Longhorn supporters have voiced strong encouragement, hopeful that Johnson’s visit signals a commitment to Texas’ program.

“Bring him Home Sark!! Hook’em,” one wrote.

“Very wise decision,” another added.

Johnson’s Recruitment Background and Recent Visits

James Johnson transferred to Northwestern High School in Miami ahead of his senior year. During this recruiting cycle, he has visited major programs, including Florida, Georgia, Miami, and Florida State in May and June. His itinerary now brings him back to Texas, where he previously attended the Longhorns’ City Limits event in April.

Johnson’s recent performance as a junior in 2024 highlighted his defensive prowess, recording 60 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, five sacks, and five quarterback hurries over nine games. These numbers confirm why he remains a prize recruit. Presently, Florida leads as the most likely landing spot with a 32.1% chance of his commitment, followed by Miami at 17% and Florida State at 12.2%, according to recruiting analysts.

Texas Aims to Turn Momentum with Johnson’s Return

The Longhorns see Johnson’s upcoming visit as a critical opportunity to gain traction. His previous experience with Texas left a positive impression, especially regarding the coaching staff and their approach to practice.

“I liked how welcoming they were with me and how good the coaches are, but my favorite thing about Texas is how they practice,” Johnson said to On3 in April. “I know they will be a great team in this upcoming season.”

If Johnson chooses Texas, he will join fellow four-star defensive linemen Dylan Berymon and Corey Wells in the 2026 class. With 13 committed players, Texas currently ranks 17th nationally in recruiting, bolstering their defensive prospects significantly for the future.

Johnson’s final decision will shape the defensive outlook for Texas and potentially influence the broader recruiting landscape for the Longhorns as they build toward upcoming seasons.
