The Los Angeles Dodgers signed veteran outfielder Michael Conforto this offseason to address their need in left field, agreeing to a one-year, $17 million contract. However, Conforto’s offensive struggles have created a significant challenge for the team, raising questions about his future with the Dodgers.
Conforto, 32, is currently batting just .168, with only 13 RBIs and 4 home runs over 202 at-bats, resulting in a negative WAR of -0.9. Although his career batting average stands at .246, the Dodgers had hoped for better than near replacement-level production from the former All-Star.
Dodgers Leadership Considers Options Amid Conforto’s Slump
Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, acknowledged Conforto’s disappointing performance but stopped short of ruling out a trade. Friedman described moving the outfielder as unlikely but not impossible, reflecting the uncertainty the team faces with its underperforming left fielder.
“Never say never,” Friedman said,
“but I think we would hold a very high bar and find it very unlikely,”
Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported.
Despite the struggles, Friedman expressed confidence that Conforto could improve as the season progresses, praising his work ethic and recent progress at the plate.
Michael hasn’t performed up to what he expected or we expected,
Friedman stated.
But, watching the way he is working, watching the progress being made, I would bet that his next two months are way better than his last two months.
Pressure Mounts as Dodgers Seek Solutions for Left Field
With the Dodgers’ lineup suffering from Conforto’s difficulties, the team weighs its options amid a challenging season. The presence of talented All-Star teammates may provide some support, but there is growing concern about the veteran’s ability to return to form quickly. Friedman also hinted at the team’s roster flexibility should injuries or ongoing poor performances continue to hamper results.
The important thing is, if we have an injury or (poor) performance, do we feel like we have different ways to maneuver? We do,
Friedman confirmed.
For Dodgers fans, Conforto’s current form is troubling, as it is rare for a player of his experience to endure such a prolonged slump. Whether he rebounds or the Dodgers pursue alternatives will be a key storyline as the season unfolds, with all options still on the table for the organization’s leadership.
