The Philadelphia Phillies, currently tied with the New York Mets atop the National League East, are preparing for Bryce Harper’s return from the injured list. Harper’s comeback signals a boost for the team, but it also creates a lineup puzzle, especially concerning the outfield.
Philles Plan to Use Kepler and Kemp as a Left Field Duo
Otto Kemp has impressed as a hitter during his time in the Major Leagues, and the Phillies are eager to keep him in the lineup. To accommodate both Kemp and Max Kepler while welcoming back Harper, the team intends to implement a platoon system in left field. According to Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic, Kepler would face right-handed pitchers, while Kemp would match up against lefties.
“Who saw limited time in left field in Triple A, could now ‘possibly’ play alongside Kepler in a strict platoon,”
Thomson said about Kemp’s evolving role.
This strategy follows a roster shuffle in which Weston Wilson was sent down to Triple-A and Buddy Kennedy was called up to provide additional infield depth, including first base coverage. Wilson had previously shared left field duties but is now replaced by Kemp in that role.
Using Platoon Strategy to Strengthen Left Field Performance
The move to platoon Kepler and Kemp aims to improve one of the Phillies’ weaker areas. Since June 9th, Kepler boasts a 1.006 OPS, and Kemp has maintained a .282 batting average since June 7th. The team hopes that utilizing both players depending on the opposing pitcher’s handedness will enhance offensive production.
Since Harper’s natural position is first base, Kemp does not have an opening there upon Harper’s return. However, with his prior experience in left field and strong hitting performance, Kemp is well-positioned to contribute regularly through this platoon arrangement.
Roster Changes and Outlook for the Phillies’ Season
These lineup adjustments coincide with other recent roster moves, including Buddy Kennedy’s addition, aimed at bolstering the team’s depth. As the Phillies continue their push atop the division, these strategic changes could provide greater lineup flexibility and improved offense.
Maintaining competitiveness in the National League East will depend on how effectively the Phillies use their returning star Bryce Harper alongside emerging players like Kemp and Kepler. The platoon approach in left field reflects the organization’s willingness to adapt and maximize player strengths as the season progresses.
