Caitlin Clark, recently back from a quad strain, helped the Indiana Fever secure two consecutive wins, pushing their record above .500 early in the 2025 WNBA season. However, their momentum stalled after losing 88-77 to the Golden State Valkyries, featuring Clark’s former Iowa teammate and close friend, Kate Martin, on Tuesday night.
Friendship Between Former Teammates Carries Into WNBA
Clark and Martin were teammates at the University of Iowa from 2020 to 2024, forging a strong friendship that has endured through their professional careers. Despite facing off three times since last season, their relationship remains positive and supportive.
Before the game, Clark mentioned a dinner with Martin and humorously apologized for potentially mispronouncing the restaurant’s name.
“I went to dinner with Kate last night, so we went to Che Fico? I don’t know if I’m pronouncing that right, so I apologize. But it was really good!”
Clark said.
Clark also expressed admiration for the Bay Area during her time there.
“I wish I had more time here,”
she remarked.
“It’s beautiful. The weather is nice. I didn’t realize how windy it was going to be. But yeah, it’s awesome, and it’s going to be fun to keep coming back here for years to come.”
Game Performance and Upcoming Challenges
On the court, Clark struggled, posting one of her poorest shooting nights of the season with 11 points on 3-of-14 shooting and missing all seven three-point attempts. She also contributed seven rebounds, nine assists, and committed six turnovers. Meanwhile, Martin provided solid support off the bench for the Valkyries, scoring nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and grabbing five rebounds during her 20 minutes.
The Fever fell to an even 6-6 for the season and now face a demanding road trip. Their next challenge is against A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET, followed by a Tuesday matchup against the Seattle Storm at 10:00 p.m. ET.
Martin and the Valkyries also stand at 6-6 and will conclude their stretch of five consecutive home games facing the Connecticut Sun on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Outlook for Both Teams Moving Forward
This matchup between former Iowa Hawkeyes teammates highlights not only the competitive spirit within the WNBA but also the enduring friendship between Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin. As both teams continue their seasons with balanced records and tough schedules ahead, their upcoming games will be crucial for establishing momentum in a highly competitive league.
