Rafael Fiziev Says Justin Gaethje Definitely Deserves UFC Lightweight Title Shot—Here’s Why
Rafael Fiziev believes Justin Gaethje deserves another shot at the UFC lightweight title after consistently ranking in the top three.

Rafael Fiziev, who has faced Justin Gaethje twice inside the octagon, believes Gaethje should receive another chance to fight for the vacant UFC lightweight title. Speaking with Mike Heck of MMA Fighting ahead of his June 21 bout at UFC Baku, Fiziev expressed his strong opinion that Gaethje deserves the next title shot based on his consistent top-tier performances.

Fiziev, known as “Ataman,” is seeking to halt a three-fight losing streak, which includes two losses to Gaethje and a defeat to Mateusz Gamrot following a leg injury setback. Despite his recent struggles, Fiziev praised Gaethje’s sustained presence among the division’s elite fighters.

On Gaethje’s status and why he merits the championship opportunity, Fiziev stated:

“I think he deserves that. He deserve the title shot, for sure. He deserve that. Not because he win me but if not him, who desrve the title shot? He stay on the top long time. Long time he stay in top-three, long time. Just lose for Max [Holloway]. Yeah, but still, I think he deserve this and if he get it, I’m happy for him.”

Approach and Outlook for UFC Baku Fight Against Ignacio Bahamondes

Heading into UFC Baku at the Baku Crystal Hall in Azerbaijan, Rafael Fiziev will compete as one of the event’s favorite fighters, yet he maintains a calm and focused mindset despite the crowd support. Scheduled for the penultimate fight before Jamahal Hill faces Khalil Rountree Jr., Fiziev is prepared to face the rising contender Ignacio Bahamondes without feeling overwhelmed.

Even with his current losing streak, Fiziev does not allow past results to weigh heavily on him. He explained his mental approach prior to the fight:

“Last three fights, I did not get what I want. I did not get my goal. But a fight is a fight. I’ve been fighting all my life and I know the last three fights I’ve lost, but for me, it’s just next.”

—Rafael Fiziev, UFC Fighter

“I forget about last three fights, and when I step in the cage, I don’t have the time to think about the last three fights. I just have time to think about how I can win against this guy. So no pressure about that.”

Why Fiziev’s Perspective Carries Weight in Lightweight Title Discussions

Fiziev’s experience as a competitor who has directly faced Gaethje twice gives significant credibility to his view that Gaethje remains a top contender for the lightweight championship. By pointing out Gaethje’s consistency in remaining among the top three fighters in the division for a prolonged period, Fiziev highlights what many consider a key measure for title contention eligibility.

With Gaethje’s only recent loss being to Max Holloway, Fiziev’s endorsement reinforces the narrative that Gaethje deserves another shot at the title, especially with the lightweight belt currently vacant. Should Gaethje receive this opportunity, Fiziev has expressed his support for his fellow fighter, reflecting respect and sportsmanship.

As the UFC lightweight division continues to evolve, Gaethje’s potential title shot could bring renewed excitement and competition among fans and fighters alike. Meanwhile, Fiziev aims to restore momentum by securing a win at UFC Baku, demonstrating his resilience and readiness for future challenges.
