Victor Wembanyama names LeBron James in his all-time starting five during an interview at Fanatics Fest NYC.

Victor Wembanyama, the French star of the San Antonio Spurs, made headlines on Friday at Fanatics Fest NYC, held at the Javits Center in Manhattan. During an on-stage interview with Kevin Hart on the Cold as Balls podcast, Wembanyama was asked to name his top five players of all time, and he instead provided his all-time starting five, including LeBron James among the legends.

Despite the anticipation, Wembanyama’s list included Steph Curry, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tim Duncan, and Shaquille O’Neal, notably excluding Kobe Bryant, a player widely considered one of the greatest to ever compete in the NBA.

Omission of Kobe Bryant Raises Eyebrows Among Fans

Kobe Bryant, celebrated as a five-time NBA champion, two-time Finals MVP, and 18-time All-Star, holds a revered place in basketball history. His career achievements and impact on the game have often placed him alongside icons like Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Bryant’s influence extended beyond the court, inspiring countless young athletes worldwide.

Tragically, Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others lost their lives in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020, near Calabasas, California. The omission of Bryant from Wembanyama’s starting five drew attention given Bryant’s lasting legacy in the sport.

Wembanyama Shares Experience Training With Shaolin Monks in China

Apart from discussing basketball legends, Wembanyama recently opened up about a unique training experience on his China tour. He visited a Shaolin temple in Dengfeng with a Spurs strength coach, embracing a rigorous physical regimen that differed significantly from his regular routine.

“It was a great experience,” Wembanyama said. “My goal going there was to put my body through things that it’s not used to doing and allowing my range of movement and strength. This was probably as very different as possible from what I’m used to doing.” —Victor Wembanyama, NBA Player

The experience reflected Wembanyama’s determination to expand his physical capabilities and skill set, highlighting his disciplined approach to training and recovery.

Strong Performance Ahead of Injury and Outlook for the Upcoming Season

Before being sidelined mid-season with a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis, Wembanyama was averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Despite the setback, he is expected to return stronger next season, with fans and the basketball community hopeful for his full recovery and continued growth.

His inclusion of LeBron James and other NBA greats in his all-time starting five illustrates the respect he holds for players who have shaped the game, reflecting both his knowledge of basketball history and his ambition for his own career.
